SSD Upgrade!

Hi,

I have a Lenovo Ideacentre A700 (Please don't kill me!), and I am thinking of throwing an SSD in it! :D

Current A700 Specs:

Intel Core i7 740Q @1750Mhz

8GB 1333Mhz Ram

AMD Radeon HD5450 1GB VRAM @550Mhz

1TB Seagate Barracuda HDD

Shitty Motherboard that only supports SATA II

The SSD that I am looking at is a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB (Because I don't need a lot of space!)

I am going to reinstall Windows because many applications etc... are glitching out, not responding, acting weird and crashing. Ex. Minecraft won't generate chunks if I fly out a few 100 blocks and sometimes the System process in task manager kills my HDD by heavily accessing it...

I think I am going to build a new PC NEXT christmas with these specs:

Intel Core i7 4790K

ASUS ROG Maximus VII Hero

AMD Radeon R9-280X

16GB Ram (Because I need it!) :D

So this upgrade is intended to increase the usability of my A700, until I can build my new PC! :)

What do you think? :)

Workstation:

Intel Core i7 6700K | AMD Radeon R9 390X | 16 GB RAM

Mobile Workstation:

MacBook Pro 15" (2017) | Intel Core i7 7820HQ | AMD Radeon Pro 560 | 16 GB RAM

You can get a cheaper drive and see the same performance since it'll be seriously bottlenecked by the SATA II port.

I was thinking the same thing... But I am thinking I will reuse it in my new PC.

it wont.

the ssd feels so fast because of the random reads and its still a lot better than a hdd.

good idea!

Do you mean the Christmas coming up or the one after that is when you'll be building a PC?

By then larger capacities should be much lower, and newer tech should have faster drives out.

It's not a huge in speed to go with a lower drive like an MX100, you only really see a drop in write speeds. It's still fast.

If you're waiting a year and a half to build, I'd just buy the cheaper drive now.

Actually it will...

I'm not talking HDD vs SSD. I'm talking a lower tier SSD vs this one. It's capped at 300 MBS.

mbps is not what makes an ssd feel fast.

Nevertheless it being bottlenecked by SATA II is the reason you can get the same speed with one that has slower sequential read speeds on SATA III. However, the Samsung does come with caching software that is unaffected by this botleneck.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

of course it is bottlenecked, but it is not a noticeable difference.

+ this already isnt an expensive ssd

+ he is going to upgrade to sata III

That's true. Although I'm not sure I agree with you on it being inexpensive.

what ssd would you recommend?

The Crucial M500 looks decent value.
