Is it possible to hook up TV bookshelf speakers to a amp and use it with your computer

Profoundsoup

Was thinking of getting a pair of high end bookshelf speakers instead of using generic PC speakers to use with my pc. I will be hooking it up to a amp/dac that has a headphone in and rca ports. I was wondering if that's possible to do?

If they are passive speakers, meaning they need a speaker amp, your headphone amp won't be enough to make them work. If they are powered (in other words, just plug in power cord to socket, plug RCA, done), then that will work just fine.

There definitely are high-end powered speakers... studio monitors is a great example of that. I'm pretty sure there are powered bookshelf speakers that go high end as well. Just make sure the product description doesn't say "passive" in it. Very few, if any headphone amps can sufficiently power a passive speaker. I'm not as familiar with passive speaker systems. Speaker amps will probably run say, $300?

The Lepai 2020A+ is only $25. Although it can only spew out max 20W. It's sufficient to run a pair of 3-way speakers about the size of the Audioengine A5+, but I don't think it's good enough for floor standings tho.

Sounds gud. I wonder how passives compare to powered speakers though at a given budget. If passives are guuud, why are monitors always powered?

I use bookshelf speakers and an amp for my speakers. As long as you get the right amp then it will work great.

Which bookshelves are you looking at? How much are you looking to spend?

There are high end powered speakers. The Focal SM11 set is absolutely superb. :)

It's often the other way around: bigger speakers are more easily to drive because of higher sensitivity.

These days the quality of powered speakers makes getting a passive+amp combo a moot issue. I'm speaking in general terms, but for most applications (consumer and pro audio) the price/perf you'd get from a decent passive/amp combo vs active only isn't worth it.

I do it :)

I've use an old stereo amp from my tv unit and a pair of mismatched LG stereo speakers. Sounds good to me so that's all I give a shit about.

It gets loud, very loud, I need some foam beds for the speakers because they shake my desk a lot at high volume.

I've got my Yamaha 100w x 5CH amp hooked up to my Sabertooth board via Optical Digital.

Movies & games with surround sound or plug my headphones into the Yamaha amp. Plenty of power to run any headphones.

So they perform consistently, no matter what setup you hook up to them. Also easier to move around frequently. IE things useful to studios.

Re: surround headphones

General "For Everyone" question:

I haven't heard/listened to a surround system for a long, long time. Surround sound headphones are something I know nothing about, the tech seems kinda "hmmmm..." IMHO but my opinion is pure speculation.

I'm trying to think of a baseline for comparison but I have none, the exception would be me seeing Tron 2 in the theatre a few years back.

Yep, this is about as subjective as a question can be but hey, Specs (esp. when it comes my full ignorance of h/p surround) mean little here...

Sooo, what's everyone's' take on surround sound headphones for games/movies?

Ty

If properly implemented, which most of the time isn't the case, it can be very good. If you don't believe in 3D sound from headphones try 'virtual barbershop' on youtube with head/earphones.

Good headphones are good and headphones that are marketed as surround or have more than 1 driver per ear are 99% of the time bad to average.. Just try Razer surround if you really want surround sound for your headphones.

So surround shouldn't even be part of the equation when buying headphones.
