Depends

What Generation?

What Model?

Are you overclocking it?

Good compared to what?

What are you using it for?

Price to performance if you've got the money for it but not an i5, unbeatable.

Kind of a pointless post if you're not going to say what it depends on.

I added more, I just wanted to ninjas the first spot

There is literally no point in doing that if it's still not a helpful post.

They are great, but you might as well just overclock a pentium

And still miss out on the performance from extra threads...

But you may as well get a Pentium, which'll be fine for MOST games, and save up for an i5/i7

Depends on the situation. If the OP can't upgrade to an i5/i7 within the next year or so then there's no point of getting a Pentium because an i3 will be good in all cases.

No, pentium has no place in modern gaming PC.. even if it is a budget one. Dual cores belong to stone age even if they have great singe core performance. i3 will beat it to the ground. Only option of use I see for pentium is in HTPC.. where Kabini 5350 beats it by price/performance/power beats it by a lot.

It'll hardly beat it to the ground, it'll be slightly better, granted, but it's more expensive. Plus, the OP didn't mention any games, so I presumed they'd rely on single core performance, not Metro, BF4 or Star Citizen which the Pentium struggles with.

Yes but I am assuming when someone says GAMING PC that he will it use also for other task besides gaming. Not just turn PC on start Steam and play all day. And overall i3 will beat it even in day to day tasks.

Besides OP didnt mentioned anything and you are just assuming that he mean single core performance. Overall i3 will win in this case. Yes it is slightly more expensive but not by much and you are also not guaranteed to overclock that pentium if you get bad chip.

it actually does destroy pentium CPUs no sweat. a first gen i3 outperforms a latest pentium in most games no sweat. talking from experience since I own both a first gen i3 (in friends rig) and a new pentium dual core and the i3 leaves it in the dust.

Vague question and vague answers. There are 4 gen of i3 chip soon to be 5. i3 is a standard go to dual core Intel chip that has very little overclocking ability. Its a very stable and reliable chip and priced well below the i5 but more than AMD APU's So for a cheap gaming PC I would go AMD APU. For a all around cheap desktop non gaming I would go i3

How good is the Intel core i3?

at transcoding 4K porn videos while playing Watch dogs? probably...pretty bad.

At playing MMO's and RTS games? probably pretty good.

Resent games like BF4 would benefit from 4 cores

Overpriced and underperforming. Never buy a prebuilt

Buy your computer component by component and build it yourself.  Its tons of fun, you get to customize everything, and you get the best performance out of your money.
