Google 2.0? Looks like they really are trying to take over the world!

source:http://www.theverge.com/2014/9/18/6375233/larry-page-wants-a-google-2-0-that-will-build-cities-and-airports

"As if self-driving carsballoon-carried internet, or the eradication of death weren't ambitious enough projects, Google CEO Larry Page has apparently been working behind the scenes to set up even bolder tasks for his company. The Information reports that Page started up a Google 2.0 project inside the company a year ago to look at the big challenges facing humanity and the ways Google can overcome them. Among the grand-scale plans discussed were Page's desire to build a more efficient airport as well as a model city. To progress these ideas to fruition, the Google chief has also apparently proposed a second research and development lab, called Google Y, to focus on even longer-term programs that the current Google X, which looks to support future technology and is headed up by his close ally Sergey Brin.

None of these ambitions seem to be taking commercial considerations into account, at least not at their outset. More realistic and near-term goals have also been under discussion during Google 2.0 meetings, including Page's determination that location tracking should be precise "down to the inches." That would allow people to identify those around them discreetly, as well as providing information to store owners that can help customize what you're presented with as you walk through a shop. Also, just as Apple is doing with Touch ID on the iPhone, Page wants to see some form of biometric security — potentially provided by the sensors embedded in smartwatches — replacing the traditional (and traditionally insecure) written password. It's hardly a surprise to see Google thinking about the future, but the ambition illustrated in this report is strikingly grand and all-encompassing, even for a company as vast as the one Larry Page controls."

Not sure how i feel about an entire city being powered by Google. While i doubt Larry Page wants to do anything bad with this kind of thing, i can not think of anything other than the kind of things that could go horribly wrong. We will have to see if this Google 2.0 becomes a reality. sky-net here we come!

Sounds cool, what could go wrong? its not apple or microsoft exactly so im pretty sure it wont be the end of the world.

The tracking thing is abit eh though.

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198625-choose-firefox-now-or-later-you-wont-get-a-choice/. Think I'd rather have competition, a company's product or two (or more) for some things, different company for another. etc.

If Google is doing things to advance the world, don't hold them back with your tin foil hats. They are benefiting everyone in this. If they came up with something first that was riddled with spam, spying and whatever other crap you don't like about them, they are still paving the way for other potential start ups to do these things.

Goodbye privacy, we had a good run.
This sounds sweet though, especially if you can have ads custom tailored to you. Having a system that knows you're not going to fall for the "Upgrade your PC!" bloatware ads, so it dosn't even bother would be great.

Projects like these are why as an Engineer Google would be my dream employer. To have it as part of my job to look at big problems like this and just say "how can we solve it?"

Every single thing google does outside it's main business, i.e. in the X division, is to improve lives. Nothing concerns me there, because they don't do that stuff for profit.

Where we need to focus is privacy, ads and the like.

Everything said by me is my humble opinion and nothing more, unless otherwise stated.

I find it fascinating that when a corporation acts like a corporation of old (for profit only, actively being selfish and considering no projects they see a large profit in) no one bats an eye, yet when a corp like Google acts benevolently, thinks of the greater good and invests in our future rather than their own people freak out and assume they are trying to take over the world. What is amazing is that there is actually very little evidence of that and as corps go Google is one of the better ones, possibly even one of the best out there. They actively fight governments on user rights, they invest in projects for the good of the future (fiber is just once example) and treat their staff amazingly well amount other things, yet there is a mounting group of people who are anti-Google which is baffling me because when I ask why the response is conspiracy theories and examples which Google has been open about.

Yet we look at the Monsanto, Kock brothers, Haliburton and many more we just shrug and say, well what do you expect, they are a corporation. Baffling to me, really is.

PS: Not a major Google Fan boy btw, I like them but like others I am watching for concrete signs of them turning to the Dark side

We live in a world where people cover their webcams while masturbating, there is no such thing as privacy anymore...

Some go rebel and do it while looking right into the lens but still you get the point,

I would be fine with it if it was Microsoft or Apple.

Apple would be too busy with design of their evil fortress's curtains to enact their massive genocide on the population of earth and Microsoft would be too incompetent to even build that fortress.
