upgrading from a 965 to a 6300

Hi, will there be a significant increase in performance in gaming from a 965 to a 6300. Right now I am debating whether or not I should upgrade my rig's cpu or not. Also if I upgrade my cpu do I have to reinstall windows. Also I don't plan on OCing

CPU amd phenom ii x4 965 @ 3.4Ghz | Motherboard msi 970a-g46 | RAM 2x 4GB Team Elite | GPU XFX Radeon HD 7870 DD | Case NZXT Gamma Classic | HDD 750 GB Hitachi | PSU ocz modxstream pro 600w

IMO that is a lateral move. I wouldn't change the 965 unless you are going with a FX8320/8350.

No, changing CPU does not require you to reinstall windows.

Thank you for the response, the reason I kinda want to stay away from a 8 core 125w is b/c I've heard that my current mobo has problems with 8 core cpu @ 125w, so I could get a 8370e but I don't think there is a bios update for it.

I own a 965, it might be better just to buy a cooler and overclock it. The biggest difference you would see in gaming would be going to at least an i3. (or a pentium if you plan single/dual threaded games)

yes in most situations it does but the 6300 overclock better so it will keep up and beat once clocked properly but still not by a big margin...it's all just saying that from the i7-965 to the FX-6300 it's a sidegrade at best and a downgrade in some situations.

I'd give a shot at overclocking the heck out of it before retiring it.

Depends, I'm only comparing 1 benchmark but the average oc fx6300 is ~4.6 and the phenom was ~4ghz

and in this one the phenom kicks its ass :P

oh then it's also the same thing...sidegrade at best and downgrade in some situations.

Still waiting for the 8320 fanatics, if they'll lose their mind somehow they'll recommend some dual socket 32 cores for single threaded games.

fx8320 is the fastest cpu on the planet. 8 is double 4 and it is 4ghz which means intel would need a 8ghz cpu to compete!1!!

shut up idiot intel fanboy!

lol

I'm much disappoint.

Look at the Cinebench scores for R15 before you take a guess next time.

The 6300 will be better then the 965 in multithreaded apps. Phenom IIs have better IPC(which you Intel nutswingers love) and with a Phenom II X6 he gets the higher IPC and 6 cores. The true answer is to get a 1075T, 1090T, or 1100T if he wants more performance without giving up any IPC by switching to FXs.

Yeah.. If he needs more CPU performance for his games, he'll most likely need more single threaded performance and any upgrade on AMD's side isn't worth it over a phenom ii 965 except for 4-5 games. The only wise upgrade would be a haswell chip.

Were you talking about the i7 965 or phenom II 965?

Phenom II 965. It will prevent him from buying another mobo(hopefully).
