Last week I wrote a feature about my disappointment at the PS4 and Xbox One not being capable of handling 4K games, and my belief that this would lead to both consoles only enjoying a relatively short lifespan. And it soon became apparent that not everyone entirely agreed with my view. Even fellow Forbes contributors have jumped on the bandwagon.

Which is all absolutely fine. It would be a crappily dull world if everyone looked at everything the same way, and it’s only through quality debate – and some of the comments I’ve received really have been impressive – that you can get to see any argument in its entirety.

However, as I set about trying to answer each of the comments (the reasonably polite ones, anyway!) on my original article individually, it became clear that most of the criticisms being levelled at me were essentially based around the same four points. So rather than keep repeating myself with individual replies, it seemed better to gather my thoughts together in one place where everyone could see them without having to wade through reams of comments and replies. If you can't be bothered to read it before you post why can you be bothered to post it? for all you know the subject could start out as the PS4 and the Xbone being outdated but end with xenophobic hate speeches with a hint of My Little Pony erotica.

 

 

Read the subject matter before posting.

 

Reasons:

 

1. The obvious one, that you shouldn't just blatantly post things in the News section in an attempt to beat others to the punch.

2. It is required(read the CoC) that you supply some of your own input on the subject and not just copy paste articles and links.

I feel as if this guy is missing the point on 4k.

 

To run 4k decently you need at least 2 GTX 780s in SLI or 2 r9-280x in Crossfire. Now, how is that going to be remotely possible on a console, let alone at a sub-$500 price point. It isn't. 4k gaming isn't even feasible on PCs sub-$1000 (at least for decent frames, which for me is >40 fps).

 

Once 4k monitors become mass produced, and at a decent affordable price, then we can talk about the issue at hand, but this probably will happen in 4-5 years. The main reason I say 5 years is because broadcast technology needs to catch up. Current broadcast technology only does up to 1080i or 720p. Once broadcasters start transmitting in 4k, that will cause market drive for consumers.

 

By that time, we will probably see new consoles in the works, with newer technology, chips fabbed at a smaller process node, increased power efficiency, and decreased TDP. Given size constraints of consoles or even say steamboxes, 4k gaming will probably not happen for a while...

 

So, essentially 4k isn't cost effective nor practical at the current time. Give technology, OEMs, game devs, chip manufactures, and GPU architecture a few years to play catch up. Then this discussion would be more legitimate.

Anyways, I can agree with what the writers says at the end.

 

 

But I am saying that for me they were launched at pretty much the worst time possible from a technology eco system point of view, with the result that they won’t feel satisfyingly current for nearly as long as their predecessors did.

But I believe that Sony and Microsoft should have at least made a product that did 1080p. Maybe take an loss on the products for awhile. For cry out loud don't make a product that is slow or at the end of a life cycle.

I think Sony and MIcrosoft do take a small loss already on the hardware, but still expect you to buy at least one game to offset said cost.

He makes generally good points. I don't agree with the disappointment over consoles not being 4K capable, the last gen consoles really had to be replaced and new ones didn't have a chance in hell of being able to drive 4K. I think that the fact they can't run 1080p, something I would consider average by now is more important. If anything, the main point should be that these consoles are not going to last anywhere near the amount of time the last ones did.

The part I laugh most at, is how these peasants denounce 4K, when their consoles can barely push 1080p at playable framerates.

The fact that they say 4K is visually indifferent immediately shows their lack of exposure to such technology. Possibly due to an inability to afford, hence reduced to substantiating their existence with a console.

Really? My XBoner was that much, I don't give a shit. I have a far more powerful PC to handle my gaming bliss. I have the console because NHL, FIFA, more FIFA and the occasional Halo. Thats it. I know my expectations. I'm not QQ'ing that they aren't powerful.

 

The vast majority of console buyers DONT GIVE A SHIT THAT THE CONSOLES ARE WEAK! They are buying consoles FFS. They really, really don't care. You tell the average teenager or parent that and they'll say "Okay...and?" To many people, that shit really, really doesn't matter. We as enthusiasts have gigantic blinders on as to what the market really wants. 

And these Forbes articles are so full of shit its pathetic. 4K gaming is not some benefit. 4K gaming is EXPENSIVE. You'll spend as much as a console (right now) just for a 4K@60fps monitor. You'll spend double to triple that on GPUs that can actually handle 4K@60fps. Its not cost effective on any level. The adoption isn't there. We are YEARS out from when 4K will be a "thing". Maybe in gaming I'd say 2-3 years for the hardware to be beefy enough and costs to be low enough. 

 

But jesus the circle jerking is amazing at times. 

 

We got it a year ago. Consoles are weak sauce. They always tend to be weak sauce. They never rock the most greatest of anything. Thats the nature of the beast. And every single fucking hour another article gets posted about how they are bad.
