Apple to Police: Take your warrant and shove it.....

pit5000

iOS8 will completely block even Apple from data on locked devices.

iCloud data will still be accessible.

http://gizmodo.com/apple-wont-turn-over-your-phones-data-to-police-if-your-1636197341?rev=1411012730438&utm_campaign=socialflow_gizmodo_twitter&utm_source=gizmodo_twitter&utm_medium=socialflow

This makes me feel good cause it's a win for privacy

but I'm also conflicted cause this could help criminals if they're smart enough

I don't want a Apple/Android comparison/flaming/insulting/mocking posts here so please don't, thanks... But I would like to know if this will make Blackberry obsolete in the security space...?

what defines a locked device?

if i have a passcode on it? if its stolen and i disable it? a carrier specific device?

edit~

"With iOS 8, Apple has changed the way its encryption works. With the newest version of Apple's mobile software in place, the company says it can no longer bypass a user's passcode—meaning that even if U.S. law enforcement presents Apple with a search warrant, the company would be incapable of accessing passcode-protected data on a user's device."

I have the best security, modded Android software that allows remote overclocking from my PC... ever see those news stories about phones with certain types of lithium batteries exploding or catching fire? If someone steals my phone I can watch them like the NSA and overvolt the battery to stress it into combustion  :P JK I don't know how to do that, I just know its been done before with the same phone I have.

I run my browser through NSA ports to make their illegal jobs easier. :P
If it's not broken, take it apart and fix it.

phone self-destruct would be a fun feature, but I'm not sure if it's legal

^no! never agree to a police search without a warrant and always plead the 5th amendment and your right to an attorney! Even if you think you don't have anything to hide they can always get you for something so use your rights to protect yourself (thats what I was taught in my US Government class). :D

Or, you could just not break the law... The only reason to fear the law and its enforcers is if you're a criminal and/or your community doesn't hold said law enforcers accountable.

technically it can be considered "overclocking too far" which is fine as long as you won-(*edit own)- the device completely, the explosions are only 1/4 a meter wide at their most and are usually just small pops then fire, and for security purposes I don't think you would get in too much trouble for burning a thief's hand or pocket.

how is this good news

if a police officer has a valid warrant apple should help

im only against mass surveillance

but IOS 8 isnt magic

eventually there will be a forensics company that finds a flaw and sells the software to the police

Asserting that you won't answer questions because of fear of self incrimination puts a huge target on your back and makes you look guilty.

that's not true you can get hit with assault or even a form of "being a terrorist" due to the thief caused no body harm and was no where near you..... It may not make sense but I remember hearing in the news some one had there house broken into and the guy used a bat to protect him self so the thief ran out of the house and the guy went after him and hit him in the head with a bat and ended up going to jail for it due to the thief was nolonger a threat to him.

huh, at least its ok to hack, mod and overclock your devices, even if you can't use the combustion of going over the limit.

What a dumb, dumb comment. Just wow.

Because of course you'd accept having CCTV cameras installed in your house - after all, "if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear".

No. Pleading the fifth is NOT evidence of a criminal or a guilty person.

I said nothing to hide IF the police needed it. Not invade my privacy. The police would not just ask for these things out of the blue.

Refusing to answer a question for fear of self incrimination makes someone look guilty. If you did nothing wrong there'd be nothing to incriminate yourself with.

Naive, and also previous incidents prove this very, very wrong.

Doesn't matter if it makes someone look guilty, that's the police's problem, not the victim's. They can ask as many questions as they want - if they have no evidence, they can't do shit, and refusing to answer questions isn't evidence.

If you are a regular person; you could have plenty to hide.

Just not something any LE agency would be interested in.

Such as what porn sites you go to...and obviously nude photo.  They are not illegal(and it's dumb to have nude photo anyway, but still...people do stupid things) but you don't want to show them to everyone else.

I'm not insulting anyone; I'm just being condescending. There is a difference, you see...
