What's more impressive, 1440p 60hz or 1080p 144hz

olivergoldvalente
Go to solution Solved by Vacsol,

Is it that noticeable when changing from 60hz? Will it be a neat feature or will it blow me away.

for some people like me it's very noticable, but I play a lot of fast paced FPS games like Titanfall.

however for 90% of games it's hardly worth it.

I'd go with 1440p@60hz for most people, unless you play competitive shooters.

So I recently got my hands on a gtx 780. This obviously means I need a new monitor as well. I've been looking at my options and it's as the title says. I'm looking at either Korean 1440p monitors or 144hz 1080p monitors. To anyone who has used or seen either, what's the most impressive when coming from a fairly small 20 inch 1080p 60hz monitor I've been using for years. I'm thinking around the $300's for budget but I'd like to keep it as low as possible.

Thanks for any and all help. I love this community.

EDIT: Please explain why your prefer one over the other and if you have seen both separately.

I'm totally gunna high jack this thread.

Anyone know how a GTX 780 performs at 1440p?

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

Totally depends.

For general browsing, obviously I'm going to take 1440p and 60hz.

For MMOs like World of Warcraft, I'm also going to take 1440p and 60hz. The UI space is a ton more useful than frame rate in a game like WoW.

For others games, I'll take the 1080p and 144hz. Especially racing and fighting games. Frame rate is a much bigger deal for me in general gaming than resolution.

No worries, that's only double my budget.

Yeah I am just saying it exists :)

But still what games do you play? If you play fps or first person in general games I would suggest 144hz. But anything else I would suggest 1440p.

my gtx 780 performs nice on my 1440p screen. all my games are quite enjoyable. I don't have any benchmarks of fps, but I havn't noticed the frames droop down. But I did turn a couple of the more demanding games down from maxed out to just "very high". buuuuuuut lately I play most of the time in 1920x1200 windowed mode

Haha. Why are you playing in windowed mode? And I mainly play shooters. So ya think 144hz is the way to go?

1440p. 144hz is cool if all you do is game, but most people use their computers for more than that alone :P

I think I'll just go 1080 surround for now.

I like windowed mode since i can jump between the game and another screen. Im a big mmo player, so I will sometimes browse the web while waiting for my dungeon/raid que or do something with skype, things like that. and because of that, ive just gotten in the habit of playing most of my games like that.

time for a real answer: I personally prefer 1440p to high-refresh rate monitors. and thats for all genres of games. shooters, mmos, simulators, etc. I find the bigger screen and (usually) better colors more immersive. And the higher screen real estate is better for multitasking, if you are into that sort of thing.

I prefer gaming on the 1600p, because more pixel = more graphics.  You will need another card or SLI.

Well I got an answer. Not well. It doesn't even perform satisfactory @ 1080p.

I'd say it's doing just fine at 1440p, tyvm.
