"Ice Climbers were cut from Smash Bros. due to 3DS limitations"

According to Sakurai, the team had the Ice Climbers running on the Wii U version of the game, but were unable to find the same success on the 3DS, due to the handheld's hardware limitations. Sakurai notes that the series' lack of popularity made the decision to cut them from the game easier.

What do mean you couldn't add them in because of the 3DS limitations? WHAT LIMITATIONS!? I know it's not the powerful console ever, but dammit man, SERIOUSLY? If they're referring to hardware limitations, that has to be bullshit, because how on earth could the Ice Climbers not run well on the hardware? I have no idea what other kind of limitation they're talking about. Either way, I think Nintendo is using "limitations" as an excuse, because there's no reason for the Ice Climbers not to be in the new Smash game.

And yes, I am "that one guy" whose favorite Smash character is Ice Climbers.

YOU HAD ONE JOB NINTENDO! ONE!

I was thinking about something with a lot of particles and effects... But im wrong.

How the hell can they not add that on the 3DS Version?

For the many of you who might not know who they are or what they look like

That doesn't make sense. Having two more characters doesn't make a game more demanding... It just makes the size of the game maybe 5MB larger. That's all.

Seeing that the PS Vita is powerful enough to run a full port of 2012 NFS MW, I wouldn't be surprised if the it was powerful enough to run a full port of The Crew. Only limiting factor is the space you would need to store that giant map.

wow that a shitty move, i wasn't fond of IC, i actually think there OP in melee, but my bro loves them, because they play very different from others, he's going to hate this, also blaming the hardware is the biggest bullshit of a excuse they can bring in this case, they are another character, we aren't talking about more arenas or bigger one neither more game modes, i see nintendo is starting to take some quotes from other devs though not the good ones...

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')

i use to have the second best link in the world here, but it died ;_; its a 404 now but it will always be here

The Ice Climbers was a unique character. It's two character, one controlled and another semi-controlled AI, and if Skyrim was evidence of anything on my 8350, more AI is hella demanding.

Not to mention, the 3DS is piss weak, just very well optimized a lot of the time.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

Smash Bros on 3DS is using nearly all of the 3DS power, this is evident by the fact that Miiverse and other background apps cannot be used when the game is running. Game size is not the issue, its the CPU which has been pushed to the limit, expecting it to compensate for an additional character doing god knows what is simply not going to happen.

Edit: Was in a rush so didn't have time to write all that I wanted but here goes.

Ice Climbers didn't make the cut because the 3DS hardware could not cope with 5 characters on screen so you can only imagine what pressure the CPU would be under if 4 players all chose Ice Climber, that would mean 8 characters. For so called PC gamers a lot of users seem to miss what has happened here or seem to think there are no limitations on the number of characters a game can have running at the same time which is false, hardware does have a limit, think about it on consoles the games with closed off areas and few enemies look the best whereas large areas with lots of enemies looks worse and can run worse.

The goal with Smash Bros 3DS was to create a portable version that is not a watered down version of the console version, in order to do this they had to push the hardware to the limit.

"According to Sakurai, since the Ice Climbers both appear on-screen at the same time as two different characters, the 3DS hardware was unable to handle having a 'fifth' character on-screen.

He adds that the Ice Climbers were playable on a very early build of the Wii U version, but were eventually dropped after it was decided both versions would have the same roster."

It sucks, but it's a handheld console, not a $5k gaming rig, it's going to have limitations.

It's disappointing, but Kudos to Nintendo for making the call to keep the experience consistent cross-platform, the goal they set out to achieve from day 1, what people have wanted since the original DS

Given how well the game performs I can let this slide personally. Running the demo it not only looks pretty solid for a 3DS game but it's always running at a solid framerate even when you turn the 3D on. If Sakurai decided that 60fps even in 3D was more important than having this character in the game? Good on him. I'm not complaining in the slightest.

.......... plus I really don't like Ice Climbers the game or the character in Smash. So I couldn't care less anyway ;)

So...isn't that a clue that the 3DS one is the weaker of the two versions?

Is this really a surprise? Also, does anyone really care? Both versions are delivering 60fps and from what I've played of the 3DS demo I assume that both versions deliver a solid version of Smash. However the Wii U version was always going to be the better version. It costs more and it's played on a larger, higher resolution screen. Why wouldn't it be? The 3DS version is, IMO, valuable only as a portable version of Smash.

This. God knows how long Smash lovers have been waiting for a portable version.
