My 5.1 setup wont work. It only plays the front two channels

Phil5

Hi,

I bought a USB external sound card and used an optical cable to connect it to an old AV amp but for some reason the centre and rear speakers wont play at all. I have tried connecting the amp to a DVD player that plays DTS (also used a 5.1 CD) and the same thing happened so there's nothing wrong with the external sound card that I bought. I just don't understand why it wont work... does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you

You need to change your receiver settings to reproduce stereo audio in surround.

1. Set the source to bitstream the supported formats (AC3 and DTS most likely)

2. Complete the speaker setup in the AV Receiver.

3. Ensure that you're not set to any stereo / 2ch mode.

My amp was made in the early 2000's and It's a pain in the ass to use. It's very complicated and here is the manual:

http://www2.yamaha.co.jp/manual/pdf/av/english/am/DSP-A5.pdf

I have tried setting it to dolby pro logic mode but it didn't help. It had some other settings in the manual but they never showed up when I was scrolling through the list on the amp.

UPDATE:

I found an old amp in the loft and I connected it all up and it played all the speakers properly. I had the old one setup properly (including 5.1 settings) but for some reason it only played the fronts.
