Upgrades

PM97

Hi guys, I am looking into building a PC and I would be building a Z97 based one. However, since X99 is out I want to know how long will Z97 be a viable platform for. This may sound a naive bit I don't really know about how often people upgrade and what is their criteria for needing an upgrade.

Thanks

We'll never know how long a platform or generation of hardware is good for. This depends on :

- What hardware comes out in the future

- What software you want to run in the future

- What "good enough" means to you

In general (for gaming that is), CPU age quite well (compared to GPUs that is). I have a 2 year old 3570K and I don't see myself upgrading for the next 2-3 years if the trend of what I stated about continues. I would say the same if I had a 3 year old 2500K (or whenever that came out).

I have a 7 year old CPU and can play anything I want. Seriously, a z97 4690k/4790k will last for a long time if you are not a "I need to play everything on Ultra and have the latest hardware every year" type of person.

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790k | CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 | Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth Z97 MARK 1 | Memory: Kingston HyperX FURY 16GB 1866MHz | GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 4GB Windforce

Storage: Samsung 840 EVO | PSU: CM Silent Pro 720W | Case: Phanteks Enthoo Luxe | Headset: Corsair Vengeance 2100 | Keyboard: Logitech G710+ | Mouse: Razer DeathAdder Chroma

Thanks guys, this was really helpful. So, to summarise: Z97 may last 3-4 years, GPUs can need upgrades every two years depending on your standards.
