Phantom Ranger

JefferyD90

So I got my build mostly done. Dubbed the "Phantom Ranger"! It only lacks the water cooling that I will be implementing, the NZXT Kraken x41 (for CPU) and NZXT Kraken x61 (for GPU) with a Kraken G10. I wont implement these until about 2-3 weeks later after I make sure all my parts are going to last and such.

Parts are as listed:

AMD A10-7850k

ASUS ROG Crossblade Ranger

AMD R9 DDR3 Memory Kit @2400mhz (2x4GB)

ASUS R9 290

Kingston HyperX 3k SSD (240GB)

ASUS Wireless adapter PCE-AC68

NZXT Phantom 820

NZXT Hale82v2 700watt PSU

NZXT Kraken x61 (cooling the CPU)

NZXT Kraken x41 (cooling the GPU)

Windows 8.1 Pro

Logitech G105 Keyboard

Logitech G600 Mouse

Logitech G930 Headset

PS and if we have learned anything about building computers from Linus, it has to be done in a kitchen.

An APU is a waste of money if you're getting a dedicated GPU. You should've gotten an 8320 and an AM3+ board instead.

Current System: CPU - I5-6500 | Motherboard - ASRock H170M-ITX/ac | RAM - Mushkin Blackline 16GB DDR4 @ 2400mHz | GPU - EVGA 1060 3GB | Case - Fractal Design Nano S | Storage - 250GB 850 EVO, 3TB Barracuda | PSU - EVGA 450W 80+ Bronze | Display - AOC 22" 1080p IPS | Cooling - Phanteks PH-TC12DX_BK | Keyboard - Cooler Master QuickFire Rapid(MX Blues) | Mouse - Logitech G602 | Sound - Schiit Stack | Operating System - Windows 10

The OG System: I3-2370M @ 2.4 GHz, 750GB 5400 RPM HDD, 8GB RAM @1333Mhz, Lenovo Z580 Laptop (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS).

Peripherals: G602, AKG 240, Sennheiser HD 6XX, Audio-Technica 2500, Oneplus 5T, Odroid C2(NAS).

I heard you can CF the APU graphics with an AMD GPU, I'm fairly sure I've read it somewhere but I'm not sure it's true. I guess he/she would have still benefit from your suggestions, though.

Only with lower end gpu

That's because only the lower end ones have the newer generation gcn architecture that the apu has. Midrange are all rebrands. But 290 and 290x is newer gen too so may or may not work. It doesn't matter, though. In all but the least CPU intensive games a 7850K will bottleneck such a high performance GPU. If this was meant for gaming it's mismatched.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

And just so you guys know, I didn't ask for your ideas on the build.  I built this as a "Ultimate" AMD build, it has their latest socket, processor, GPU cores, AMD Ram, so on and so forth. (when I was buying part ASUS no longer made the reference video cards so I could only get a 290 and not a 290X)  Also I bought the SSD about a week before AMD announced their R7 SSD line up, but as I am a huge anti-Toshiba kinda guy Im glad I didn't.

Didn't get a XFX power supply because NZXT makes AWESOME case and case accessories.  Once I get the Kraken's in there it will be only 4 brands I have in my machine, ASUS, AMD, Kingston, and NZXT.  With Logitech components of course. (you could argue 5 with Microsoft software, but then I guess we could go on to say Blizzard, Valve, and so on)

I wouldn't invest in a 3 year old platform.

  • 6 months later...

I have updated my gallery to include my Kraken AIO's...

I have had them in for MONTHS now, just never bothered taking a picture of it and sharing. But the build is completed and is working flawlessly.
