3TB hard drive to replace my 320GB one, for games

acolombo

I'd like to replace my two 320GB Hard Drives for one 3TB or 4TB. I want a Western Digital HDD, cause I have always had WDs and I like them.

I'm gonna use it for storage but also to install my games on. Are games very demanding for the Hard Drives? Do I have to buy a WD Black if I want to game on it or also WD Green are okay?

I really like my WD Green, mainly because it costs less than the others. I've used it only for file storage since now though. I don't have any expectation in terms of waiting time when I transfer files, but is Green a problem when loading in games? Is there a real difference or we are just talking about fractions of a second?

Thanks for the help...

The only thing you'll see with different hard drives and ssd's is loading time for levels or multiplayer games.

A WD Green or Blue is perfectly fine, the loading times won't be significantly longer.

I recommend Blue over Green. Black isn't really necessary in this scenario unless you really want to spend that much for a harddrive.

I can see the argument for not using a WD green for a boot disk, but the black isn't fast enough to make that a pleasant experience.

Well...you could get a Blue or a Black.

However,if you go with the Blue route, keep in mind that the Seagate Barracuda is better.

And if you chose the black...it's quite loud.

It's not a boot disk, I have my SSD for the OS and that's why I want a new hard drive for games... my computer is most used for productivity, and it feels like a waste to install games on the SSD. Also I'm running out of storage...

I'd see if you can get a Seagate Barracuda. While they generally have a higher rate of failure when compared to a WD drive, it's still extremely low.

I'd go for the Black over the Green if you're going to be running anything off of it like a game, as the Green has a lot of power saving features and is generally a slower drive because of it.

But yeah, I would recommend a Barracuda as well. They have served me well as solid drives.

I know. I was pre-empting the inevitable "Greens are crap and slow" avalanche.

WD Blues only go to 1TB though.

Woops! Someone has pointed that out.

I found this out as well, which is why I also mention the Green and the Barracuda later on.

Green is the slowest of the three. It doesn't have a fixed rpm; instead it has "IntelliPower" which is a balance of spindle speed, transfer rate and caching algorithms.

I've had a Barracuda for what...8 years now. It's still working, but I got another one because you know...240GB isn't enough nowadays.

Hi there, as the other forum members already mentioned, the WD Blue drive has a maximum capacity of 1 TB.

As for the other two drives you are considering - the WD Green is more suitable for a secondary storage, while the WD Black is specifically designed for gaming -

it spins at 7200 RPM and has larger cache (64 MB), which will reduce the load times. It also comes with a 5-year warranty.

Hope this helps.

I have just put in two 3Tb seagate drives, just their base model (ST300DM001), they have been outstanding.  I would avoid the 5400RPM.
