Amd Fx 8120 with Asus M5a78L-M Usb3 overclocking issues

Good day fellas!

A month i bought a new psu which i thought it will let me to safely overclock my cpu (Amd Fx 8120). I managed to reach a stable 4.1 ghz using the multiplier method and monitoring with hwmonitor during prime95 stress tests. Everything worked well while using the pc for non gaming activities.

Now the problem: while playing any game i observed huge fps and gpu usage drops at random moments which disappear after 10-15 seconds. At first i thought it happened because of my old psu which was cheap and old. but after returning my cpu to stock speed the problem didnt occur anymore.

How could overclocking the cpu affect gpu usage ? Is it because of the cpu, mobo, mobo's vrms or what? I hope i can resolve this issue to fully use my cpu. Also the motherboard doesnt have voltage control option in the bios. Can i modify that using other programs ?

If it is the motherboard can you suggest a decent one for overclocking with a 970 or 990 (stretching my budget unfortunately) chipset ? My buying source is http://www.pcgarage.ro/

Thanks!

My build details: Amd Fx 8120 , Corsair Vengeance 8gb, Msi Gtx 660 Twin Frozr iii, Seasonic S12II-520 Bronze, Asus M5a-78l-m usb3

Your CPU is probably starving for voltage if your case supports ATX i suggest this board http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4672#ov It has a strong VRM component, and the spacing is just right for 2 graphics cards + a wifi card and a sound card if you wish to add one, although its integrated sound is pretty good.

If you case doesn't support ATX then say so and i'll look for something else.

EDIT: btw i looked at the link you posted but it showed a bunch of promotions not a specific board or anything, in a language i can't understand ( x D).

That chip peaks out around 4.6, I would sell it and start over with intel.

im right so listen, its your cpu being throttled because the vrm on that puny board that can't handle an 8 core bulldozer, especially with increased voltage/clock speeds, get some better airflow over the vrms (left of cpu socket), your cpu is being throttled down to keep your mobo from catching on fire and your gpu usage is most likely dropping because at 1.4 gHz (what most amd cpu's throttle to) your gpu will be serverely bottlenecked. lower your oc its not really an overlcokign board. how long are you even priming for anyway? try occt it has active clockspeeds and a built in stability test

i have the same board wouldnt do much overclocking on it to be honest. you risk blowing the vrm's.

got my cpu from 3ghz to 3.5 and even thats pushing it.

stick with d3mon advice i would

The board doesn't have any VRM cooling & the power delivery is pretty basic so it's not suitable for overclocking and over-volting especially an FX 8120.
It should be noted that when you raise the multiplier it will automatically raise the voltage as well, so you were over-volting without knowing it.

The lowest board I'd suggest is the Asus M5A97 R2.0 .

The Asus M5A99X EVO boards are also fantastic overclockers.
