Plex over VPN

Randomacts
While if I could get it working without a VPN that would be cool too.. but right now it seems that is my only option.

I am unable to remotely connect to my Plex server as it seems like the ports are blocked or something..

I have heard of people getting it to work over VPNs and that would be awesome.. hell I'm willing to spend some money if I have to.. but my dorm's internet isn't even fast anyways.. (5/5 :( )

Is the plex media server hosted on your home network?

When you login to plex (and you're not at home) does the server show up?

Have you forwarded port 32400 to the server?

You don't need a VPN connection to access your PLEX library remotely.
Make sure that your Router has port forwarding enable to your PLEX computer. As Blade of Grass said, the default port is 32400 but you can change it to what ever you like in the PLEX settings.

Also check that your PLEX computer firewall is not blocking the port 32400 and or PLEX itself.

Once this is done, you only have to enter the public ip (where the PLEX computer is located) with the port in your browser and add /web at the end to access it.

At this point you might not be able to do much.
Even if you create a VPN, it might get blocked by your dorm firewall/router so you won't be able to access it outside your dorm network.

Unless you are able to connect/create a VPN outside your dorm network and connect to that vpn from where you want to watch your movies.

You could also try https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/categories/200139156-Plex-Pass
for their plex sync / cloud sync.

I can't port forward on my dorm internet.

Set up Open VPN on a cheap VPS, and use IPtables to forward traffic to your Plex server. I did something similar for 3 years while I was at university.

Is there a good guide on doing that? I haven't ever done any of that stuff.

I guess I could google each part..

It is a lot more simple than it sounds.

Set up Open VPN. there are hundreds of guides online.

Once you have OpenVPN running, you simply forward traffic incoming on specific ports to the IP address of the Open VPN client.
