Is going from an i3 to an i5 really worth it?

Go to solution Solved by LemonSpice,

I have an itx Gigabyte b85n Mobo as i said in my first post, so that throws out that possibility without spending more money.

then i would go with a http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D697PEG/?tag=pcpapi-20 as it is 4 cores 8 threads and it works with your mobo and it is better than the i3 or the i5 its about as good a s a i7 4770

So currently I have a core i3 4130 in a gigabyte b85n Motherboard with 8gbs or RAM. So overclocking is out of the picture unfortunately. But I was wondering if getting a i5 will help performance with things like video editing. I'm really getting into the whole editing thing lately and I'm not sure if an i5 would make much of a difference compared to an i3. I also just bought a GTX 780. So will the i3 be a huge bottleneck for games like battlefield or borderlands or skyrim. I'd appreciate any and all help.

For video editing yes, an i5 will be a big improvement, but an i7 would be even better.

Yeah, it would be worth it. An i7, though would be worth it. Maybe a secondhand 4770 or something...

Yeah an i5 would be a huge step up in something like editing but at the same time it might not be worth it since you have an i3 already. What is your budget? If I were you I would wait a generation at least before upgrading anything at all.

It would be a nice step up for applications that can actually leverage the extra cores over threads, but TBH it isn't a giant upgrade for gaming.

waiting for the next generation means a new mobo and a new CPU, not sure if that is worth it for the entry level stuff I do. I'm looking to spend around a couple hundred. An i7 would be pushing it.

4790k would be even better than all of the other options

If you have a Z97 board you will be able to just buy a Broadwell CPU and use it with your motherboard as per normal. But seeing as cost is a concern for you it does not make sense to upgrade so soon since you already spent money on the i3.

For editing it would be a pretty nice kick in the ass.

I have an itx Gigabyte b85n Mobo as i said in my first post, so that throws out that possibility without spending more money.

Aha sorry I missed that, I am really exhausted right now. But at the same time my point still stands that upgrading will give you a significant performance boost in editing however it is very cost inefficient since you will now have an i3 you don't use.

Yes that is brilliant. That particular Xeon is basically an i7 at an i5 price point. Intel kind of shot themselves in the foot on that one but it does not have an iGPU.

Is it any better or worse for gaming, and thanks for the find by the way. I totally forgot about xeon.

It should perform the same as an i7 clocked at the same clock speed.
