New SSD for my notebook

My notebook hard drive died last sunday and I'm looking to replace it for a ssd. I was looking to the samsung 840 evo 500gb (have been reading a lot about performance decrease over time about this one) and i would like to know if there is a better option out there.

What is the size of the SSD you need?

Most ssds from reputable manufacturers are more or less the same. Most things from Kingston, Intel, Samsung, Adata, Crucial are good.

I'd suggest a 512GB Crucial MX100. It's practically as fast as the 840 Evo, but significantly cheaper.

Samsung evo is about as good as you can get on a budget. Most other drives will advertise similar speeds but not deliver. However it's not the best for price to performance. If you have an older laptop chances are you won't have sata 3. So even the cheapest hard drives might get you the best performance you can achieve with that laptop.

That means sata 2. Max bandwidth being 375MB/s So invest in the cheapest drive you can find.

No problem, the sata thing confuses many people because sata 3 means 6Gbs and not 3Gbs.

EVO is something nobody should buy right now. Seeing how lots of people have issues with very slow reads on cold files, its really no point in buying one. Just go with mx100.

 

If you're after 1TB, then go with m550 or m500 if you can find one.

whut....I have an evo drive... it actually performs faster than advertised. I also have an adata sp900.  It get about 420 read and 280 writes. However if you look at specs it's supposed to be faster than than the evo. This seems to be the case with almost every drive out there. If you look at any review for ssds anywhere you will see the samsung evo at the top right with the samsung pro.

Also, if you have insanly better benchmarks, thats due to rapid ram caching.

thank you for bringing that to my attention. I can't download the app but after doing my own testing I can say the sequential reads have dramatically gone down. Random reads are still the same, which is why I haven't notice because applications dont use sequential. But I have no taken steps to ensure a little more life out of my ssd. I knew I should have gotten the samsung pro when it was 165...
