Custom Desk Build!

TannerThanU

First build log here lol.

Current setup isn't doing it for me, and I want to go big for my new setup. (new everything!)

First thing to do is upgrade desk size so here is the build log to my new desk!

*May take till Christmas to Build!!*

This is for my woods class project and features a lightly stained top with a metal sub frame to support. The idea is to make a Ikea style galant desk but better and bigger!

below the text field, next to "Post" there's "More Reply Options"

then, attach files and click "add to post"

or

click the image button above the text field, it looks like a small photograph

then input the image URL

There is an icon on the taskbar that allows you to copy the url of a said image then post it.

Day 1 Update:

Got the 5' table planks assembled, we have to make the planks fresh from the mill so theres a lot of little work to get them to be the right length, I think these equal 20" and need 10" for the 2 1/2' width, its very tedious work...

Still need to rip and finish the rest of the planks to make a 5'x2.5' table, then plane it to 3/4" (currently 1")

had an error getting the second picture uploaded...doesn't like my phone's pictures i guess....

Not much has been changed...Been jointing boards and other things every other day. Can't accomplish much with only an hour and a half, may have to do more work outside of class...

The hard part is matching and evening the boards out so they come to 30" Exact...

Update:

Got the other half of the 5' desk glued, and started on the corner desktop, unfortunately due to measurement lost the whole corner and had to start over, a solid waste of 30 minutes, I'm going to hold off on planing the slabs of wood until our new planer comes into the shop!

Stuff Left to Do:

Get metal pipe

Weld Pipe into frame

Make corner desk

Make 4' Desk

Plane 5' Desk

Glue 5' Desk

Plane 4' Desk

Glue 4' Desk

Plane corner

Glue Corner

Stain

Bolt together

Transport home and use!

Update!

Not much has happened...scraped the glue on the outside then I'm wrapping up cuts on the corner part, next that will be glued.

I've got about a week until the new planer comes in so I'll be first in line for that  :)

Probably should pick up the metal but I need some help! I think I need 38 feet but that is exact and Idk how much I'd need because there would be leftovers that are unused...how do I calculate this...? (6ft tubes)

So I have everything cut to rough size (+1inch) and the width came out a 1/4 of an inch to the final cut so I got pretty lucky in that and hopefully nothing gets ruined xD

I also got the 4' Table peices cut and Ill have to do some finishing work with those then those will be glued Monday!

  • 2 weeks later...

Frame of the table is built and everything, its just needs some stability because of the thin tubing...I didn't realize how small that the tubing for it was...Ill get some Pictures tommorrow...? I have work after school today so probs not this afternoon...

Anyone have an idea on how to stabalize a table without welding support peices around it? (Ive tried the angled metal on the corners also)
