Did my GPU just die?

Pretty sure my 7950 just kicked the bucket, but wanted to get your opinions/thoughts on the matter before I go looking for a replacement.

 

It's been giving me the odd artifact every now and then - usually just a blip from time to time, didn't think much of it. Now, recently I've been having issues where my displays randomly go into sleep mode (say "no signal" and shut off) and the PC then restarts all on it's own. Could happen after 30 seconds of gaming or after an hour.  It ONLY happens while gaming or with load on the GPU. I tried running firmark on the highest settings at 1080p and it didn't even run for more than 3 seconds before it shut down on me.  :o

 

First things first, I completely uninstalled all AMD drivers and software, then re-installed the latest (14.4 stable, not beta). It was ok for a day, then it started happening again. 

 

I installed "whocrashed" (awesome tool btw) and in the logs it showed the cause had something to do with the ATi/AMD drivers, HOWEVER, that doesn't necessarily mean the drivers were the cause in a case like this. If it's a hardware issue with the GPU where the GPU fails in some way, it will show as a driver error in the logs.

 

Now, just today at work, I ran furmark on my PC at home (via remote access) at max settings, but 720p windowed (so I could keep an eye on HWmonitor) just to test again and see if it would crash. After only a few minutes I lost connection, it crashed again. I went home for lunch and checked on the machine and it was powered on but showed no display and no SSD/HDD activity - no POST. I attempted to restart, same thing. It powers on but no display and no POST. I pulled the GPU out and plugged the display into the motherboard DVI - it started up no problem.  ;)

 

PC works totally fine on the Intel HD 4600 (and good thing I just updated those drivers yesterday). Ran furmark and not a single hick up.

 

It's not a temperature issue. My CPU and GPU are both water cooled and temps were in the low mid 30's. 

 

 

So, what do you all think? Is my GPU dead?  :(

Sounds like it's dead mate, can be the PSU though. Hope it's still alive. :)

Well, you've done most of the diagnostics yourself, it seems safe to say that your GPU is dead. You could try baking it, if you're into that kind of thing, otherwise yeah... time for a new GPU :mellow:

Does sound like it's on it's way out.

 

Only "trick" i know of to possibly get your card running again may not work, and it may end up even killing it. By re-flowing the solder. I did this to my old BFG 8800GTS and it's in  my mate's rig which i put together with old parts, still works to this day.

Did you ever overclock the card?

 

Oh yes. ;) Gave me a good 10-15+ fps boost in most games. Not too shabby for a voltage locked GPU. 

 

It ran stable for quite some time with the core at +150mhz and memory at +200mhz. In the last couple months I had pulled it back to +100/+150 due to increasing artifacting/instability. It ran fairly well like that up until a few days ago. It was still crashing even without the OC.

 

Most of you are probably thinking now "well you killed it by overclocking" or something to that affect, but really, it was showing sparse artifacts even before I started overclocking it, so I think this was in the cards (no pun intended) for a while.

 

PSU specs are in sig. It's a decent quality 80+ bronze unit with more than enough juice. I regularly clean the dust filter to ensure the PSU never gets too hot either.

 

 

Funny, I've never heard of this "cooking" method to fix GPUs before. Will have to look that up. Have nothing to lose by trying...

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I've brought back 5 of 8 cards doing so. (All older gen cards,(4870's, 5850's) nothing recent)

Not hard, not long, pretty sweet turning a paperweight into a workable workhorse.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

What is this "whocrashed". I might have use for that. Although I'm still RMA'ing my gpu. Had crashing problems, but only in certain games.

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs

Yeah, worst-case scenario - if I can't revive the card, I'll just put the stock cooler back on and use it as a cup-holder, TekSyndicate style. :P

It's a pretty nifty program I just only found out about earlier today, lol. You can download it for free and it'll tell you what (supposedly) caused your PC to crash.

I actually checked with Gigabyte support and my 7950 is still technically covered under warranty until June 2016. Needless to say, I submitted an RMA ticket and am now just waiting to hear back if they will accept it. 

 

I'm still going to upgrade to a 290/X, but if I can get this card working again, or a replacement, then that would be perfect as a spare.

it seems like it had a lot of degradation due to a high ovlerclock as that was a nice oc

Im blaming that PSU straight away. The chances are it fed bad power to the GPU and killed it.

 

Your PSU is Tier 4 " Not Recommend for stressful situations.  May not be able to put out full rated power above room temperature, and may slightly fail to meet ATX specs"

Cooler Master actually updated/upgraded this PSU not too long ago (before I bought mine) and made some significant improvements over the previous version. I'm skeptical if that list is referring to the latest version or the older version, since it's not well known.

 

The spec chart of the PSU I have states: Output capacity 650w and Max Output 780w. So it's not like it's one of those cheap PSUs where the rated wattage is actually the max output. It shouldn't have had any trouble providing enough juice to the GPU even if it was above room temp.

 

Not ruling out the possibility though...
