Galaxy Note 4 beats the S5 and takes the title for "The Best Smartphone Display"

OriginalPromise

Best Smartphone Display

With the Galaxy Note 4 there are many significant improvements over the Galaxy Note 3 that we tested a year ago, but also with the Galaxy S5 that we tested in March, and the Galaxy Tab S that we tested in June. The most impressive improvements are in the pixels per inch and resolution, the Absolute Color Accuracy, Peak Brightness and screen readability in High Ambient Light, and display Power Efficiency.

Samsung is not falling behind in screen technology. In fact, they may be leading it.

*patiently waits for IGZO displays*

Come on :( atleast a smartwatch with it???

Nice to see Samsung spending more money on the display trying to improve AMOLED.

Samsung dominates around 90% of the OLED market.

I sincerely believe that OLED is the future, and LCD is a thing of the past.

Igzo will still take over in the future. IMO; it's much better for mobile devices. I can see oled maybe becoming a thing for desktops but i doubt it. Samsung will have to switch transistors in the future if they really want 4k in phones.

I am surprised that no smart watch manufacturer has decided to buy out an omega design or a rolex one and lay down a transparent display over the watch face so it can display other things like texts and stuff. I see that being what smart watches should be.

Being a mechanical timepiece fan, I'm not yet ready for smart watches (or their integration into conventional designs).

Well so am I I own a few good movements myself but I just think this would be the best way for everyone. You don't even have to use it it could just sit there and you wouldn't even see it. Potentially you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between one that did and one that didn't.

Should be ready, but there really is no point of going IGZO OLED right now and I think Samsung knows that too. Samsung got the license for IGZO-TFT in 2011 and they still haven't said a word about it. While Sharp got it in 2012 and been releasing IGZO LCD. Most likely, it's probably price. IGZO LCD costs a lot more then regular LCD. Those Japan only Sharp Smartphones cost a lot, and my guess is the IGZO panels are one of the factors.

I would pay 50$ more for a moto G with igzo if I had to... but I see what you mean but even LG has them in the ipad. So i'm assuming they'll start popping up in 2015.

Yes that is perfect. Why isn't this getting any hype. It has great battery life, it still has craftsmanship. The Apple watch is shit to this.

It's the watch I've been keeping tabs on. Linus tweeted me saying that they were going to get the watch. So I hope they do and review it and hope its good. Also, Fossil and Intel have teamed up to make a smart watch. Keep your eyes peeled for that.

Those are some fantastic results.

Is it safe to say that SAMOLED is now objectively superior to LCD?

Color accuracy, reflectiveness and brightness all seem to be fixed, and those were basically the only areas where LCD was ahead.

Even the power consumption went down.

I am really impressed with these results. Now I'll just have to wait for good Exynos analysis (rumored to be Cortex A53 + A57) and camera analysis (new Sony sensor and how much OIS helps in low light).

Samsung's Exynos has always been inferior to the Snapdragon chips. My biggest disappointment. Exynos 5420 is objectively inferior to the Snapdragon 800.

It's like Samsung tries to NOT overtake Snapdragon.

Inferior how exactly? Do I need to remind you of the Exynos 4210, which kicked the butt of every other chip out at the time? The Exynos 4412 was pretty good as well. Qualcomm has only been dominant since Krait, and one big part of their success with that was their modem.

If the 5433 really has a Cortex A53 + A57 CPU then I expect it to be waaaay better than the Snapdragon 805 (performance wise). A53+A57 is what the Snapdragon 810 will be, so if the rumors are true then Samsung will basically be half a year ahead of Qualcomm (on the CPU architecture side).

It was inferior because

A. it didn't outperform the snapdragon, nor was the battery life batter. In fact in most benchmarks S800 beat Exynos.

B. it lacked LTE

C. it lacked 4K decoding

Exynos 5420 was clearly the inferior one.

Don't base your entire perception of Exynos on the Exynos 5420.

Like I said before, the Exynos 4210 was fantastic when it came out. Far better than anything from Qualcomm. The Exynos 4412 was a solid chip as well.

The new Exynos SoC might have Cortex A53 and A57 cores, so it will outperform the Snapdragon 805 (again, it would mean Samsung is one generation ahead of Qualcomm).

It is possible to add LTE with for example Intel's standalone modems (and Samsung has made some LTE modems on their own). The Note 4 with Exynos will have it.

The Exynos 5433 will most likely support 4K video decoding. I mean, the 5430 supports HEVC already so I doubt they would add that but not 4K. Pretty sure it can record in 4K as well.

Exynos is in an all time low right now. It had a fantastic start and has gone downhill since then, but that's not to say that it won't get better. The info we got right now looks very promising.

Cool. Would you be willing to both wind and charge such a watch? Maybe a watchwinder with wireless charging?

They have to make everything quite sturdy too, as people keep good watches for a very long time. Maybe they can have battery replacements done during preventive maintenance service (together with the movement inspection, bearing changes and lubrication).

I have an old Casio watch that is about 20 years old maybe even older than that. It has never had it's battery changed and it does more then any smartwatch to date and that isn't an exaggeration. It has a printer for f sake and a full sized keyboard that is connected via radio. It has a station you lay it on and you can print from it like receipts and stuff. It is also a really comfortable watch to wear which I cannot say about the Apple watch which looks really uncomfortable. I have a few other watches but I think that is my most unique watch. I don't buy expensive ones just unique ones that do really cool things like one that you pull out the crown and it's an aerial and when you do that is sends an SOS to all stations around the area to come and rescue you. I don't know the range but I would imagine it's a long way.
