How did people edit video before the advent of dslrs and premiere?

cutting, and putting together film and copying them after. I'm guessing

Computing enthusiast. 
I use to be able to input a cheat code now I've got to input a credit card - Total Biscuit

Seriously, original editing was literally cutting the frames of film and reattaching them to make a cut. Later the created machines that could do that automatically.

 

Following that NLEs were born, such as Edit Droid from Lucas Film in the 80s. Following that, Avid made the fist computer based editor, Media Composer for the Macintosh 2.
