What's Broadwell?

I heard it has something to do with the way Intel makes CPUS but what is it specifically and what advantages will it have?

It should have 14nm Tri-Gate transistors. Allowing for more power in a smaller size, less heat, and more efficiency.

Ivy Bridge was the last gate shrinkage. (22nm)

It is the next line of Intel processors code name, 5th Generation. It will use a smaller manufacturing process using 14nm which should have lower power consumption as seen in their 4.5W chip.

Is it compatible (or will it be) with Z97?

We'll see. Most likely not. The CPUs will be much different.

I'm guessing completely new chipset.

Yes it will be.  Intel sockets support at least 1 Tick and 1 Tock.  The only CPU on the 1150 socket is Haswell currently.

QUOTE ME IN A REPLY SO I CAN SEE THE NOTIFICATION!

Intel does a tick tock thing. Broadwell is a tick which means we have a die shrink, but not necessarily an IPC improvement (I fully expect intel to shove every extra mm^2 of die space/transistor count into the iGPU). However recently we've seen architecture changes on what are supposed to be 'just die shrinks' too.

LGA775

  1. Prescott = tock (90nm netburst arch)
  2. Cedar mill = tick (65nm netburst arch)
  3. Conroe/Kentsfield = tock (65nm core arch)
  4. Wolfdale/Yorkfield = tick (45nm core arch)

LGA1156/1366

  1. Nehalem = tock (45nm new arch)
  2. Westmere = tick (32nm nehalem)

LGA1155/2011

  1. Sandybridge = tock (32nm new arch)
  2. Ivy bridge = tick (22nm sandybridge based core)

LGA1150/2011-3

  1. Haswell = tock (22nm new arch)
  2. Broadwell = tick (14nm haswell based core)** odds are Z97 only

LGA1151/2011-3...?

  1. Skylake = tock (14nm new arch)
  2. Cannonlake = tick (10nm? skylake based core)

Broadwell is confirmed Z97 only, but it uses the same 1150 pins as Haswell, so it'll work on any Z97 board with a BIOS update

Keep in mind that these are very broad outlines. With the release of Devil's Canyon so recently the speculation is that Broadwell might only show up on mobile platforms where a low TDP and a cooler chip make a lot of sense. It's probably likely that will be the only differences between Broadwell and Devil's Canyon.

Well Broadwell is pretty much confirmed to be compatible with 1150 so...

Well then we are cleared up hear then.

Broadwell is a shrunk version of Haswell (14nm instead of 22nm). It will be compatible with Z97 after a BIOS update.

The next processor (Skylake) will not be compatible with Z97. It will use a new socket called 1151
