Router adds latency/reduces speed?

Doughnutnator

Hi! The support guy from my ISP just left from my house, he changed all the cables that connects my house to the ISP.

He saw my router (DLink DIR-600, with DD-WRT), and he said to me that this router can only handle 5Mbps (wat).

But somehow it was true, I disconnected the modem from the router, connected it directly to the PC and BOOM, 10Mbps and superb ping.

What I should do? I'm so freaking confused

Thank you, and sorry if this is a noob question, but somehow it's true. (Maybe a have a crappy router).

Adding routers or switches or anything to your ethernet line will increase ping and reduce speed. The best thing to do is remove anything unnecessary, such as old routers.

So it's normal? I should connect the PC directly to the modem then?

Yes

Great, thank you. What if I use a splitter? Connect it to the modem, make one ethernet cable go directly to PC and other to ther DIR-600? That would add latency?

Yes

Also, my modem have a USB connection, that can be used apart of the ethernet one. USB would be slower than Ethernet? With that I can connect the PC and the router at the same time and the PC would be directly connected to the modem.

Yes USB would be slower. If you need more ports for multiple devices you should invest in a new (good quality) router or network switch.

Can you recommend me one router? I only have 10Mbps of speed, USB would still be slower?

USB might not be slower but it will add latency. I don't know many routers so you would be better off making a separate post asking for router/switch recommendations for your budget.

Excellent, thank you very much.

Excellent, thank you very much.

What is the model of modem you have? Most likely the added latency and reduced speed is because your modem AND router most likely are acting in "Router Mode". Many modems these days have an integrated router in them, even some single port modems.

The issue is that both the modem and router may be performing NAT (network address translation), and you essentially end up with a LAN inside another LAN.

If your modem is operating in "Modem Only" mode, and your Router is the one dialing in via PPPoE, then you should not experience any speed or latency issues. Of course whether this can be fixed largely depends on what model of modem you've got.
