Do you believe in internet addiction? (Poll - private)

Are they addicted to the phone or the internet? I would think most phone addicts are internet addicts.

I wonder... I think they just feel the need to be able to have the thing near them to check it for mails/facebook and whatnot, how many times haven't see I seen people check their phones every min or 2 in the train, bus without having received a text or call.

Or maybe the fear they get from having it taken away is that others have access to content they don't want revealed, let's say dirty texts and so on. No clue really, my little sister goes on a rampage if I take away the phone, I can see the need for it in her eyes just to have it. Each to their own I guess. As long as it doesn't impact her results at school and she doesn't bring the thing up while we're eating/talking I'm fine with it.

I said "I call bullshit" because of the people claiming that they are addicted (and we know tons of them) when in reality they are just spending a lot of time and consider it an addiction because of that fact. So I made the point below how the internet is multi purpose and that's why we spend a lot of time on it, not because we are necessarily addicted to it, but more because we find it practical. Do I believe it is a real addiction? YES. Do I believe we and the media are blowing things out of proportion? HELL YES! :)

Completely agree but that is why I added the last question. While I have done my fair share of scrolling (we all have), I have never lost hours to LTT even though there was nothing to do. I would get bored and do something else.

On a side note, I didn't realise you were from Serbia. I have to say I met a few really cool Serbs on my travels through europe. Went to visit Beograd as well. Absolutely beautiful city.

I feel addicted. I can't stop going to the LTT forum even while studying. D:

I know how you feel bro. It took me 4 hours to do a German homework which could've been done in 1 or 2 hours.

Well mate, if you are in Serbia any time soon, feel free to leave a message, I'm 1h 30 min away from Beograd. :)

On topic again, if I'm bored I will find something to do, either do homework, hit the gym, go out, do chores etc. I find myself bored when I'm on break, as soon as college year starts back up I barely have the time to sit around on my PC. :)

The problem I see with this is that people are not learning a very very important life skill. Patience. We are so used to now that we can't go a couple of hours without checking statuses or whatever.

One simply does not cut grass while there is internet. Wait for the internet to go down, then cut the grass.

No because I don't believe in addiction. The human mind is capable of overcoming most things, and you are in control of yourself. I blame people for their actions, not inanimate objects or metaphysical concepts.

I support that view, however addiction is real. What would there be for the mind to overcome if not addiction?

Self control is a skill that we must practice to become good at. Learning to be patient is a big part of that. So what happens if children grow up without learning these skills? Blame the parents all you want but that doesn't change the fact that it still happens.

@chilicheeseburger Same question to you.

All kinds of addiction can be overcome with self control. Even physiological addiction can be overcome. My proof being the Placebo effect. The human mind can overcome more than we give it credit for. Give someone a sugar pill and tell them it's viagra, and you get the effects of viagra (most effective if they've never had viagra before). The simple fact is that the human mind has the ultimate control over the human body, and any addiction can be overcome by enough willpower and self control.

Even then, that's not entirely what I am talking about. I believe addiction to be little more than a scape goat, yes, it IS a physiological condition to some extent, but the fact remains that as a human being the addict is more self aware than any other organism on the planet, and as such, is ultimately to blame for their own actions and problems. I think of addiction not as a disease, but as a way for people to shirk their own responsibility for what they do, and what happens to them. Which is ultimately not a good thing for them, it's better for them to own up to their problems, to say that "I have allowed myself to become this" and try to fix it. Blaming the drug/inanimate object, does nothing to actually help the person

I do personally know a heroin addict who has tried just about everything there is to get off of it. I mean everything, even traveling to another country to try this drug that supposedly can overcome any addiction, yet she is still using, still on methadone, and still in an abusive relationship with her asshat of a husband (who's ass I would kick given the chance). The simple fact remains, whether or not she is aware of it, she does not want to quit, she simply says that she wants to because other people (her parents and extended family) make her feel bad for using (which she should) instead of personally WANTING to quit, and as such, all the counseling and drug treatments in the world will not help her. If you want to quit something, you have to actually WANT it, not for social reasons (guilt) or anything else, you have to want it for selfish reasons. You have to want it for your own survival and your own happiness.

With regards to the heroin addict you know, do you not think you are now labeling all addicts based on the personal experience you had with this one person. And even still, in many cases of internet addiction we are dealing with kids. Kids don't make life choices. They're kids and they do what is fun. Problem is, this is a very easy form of having fun that also could have detrimental affects (I believe anyway) on a child's mental development if not properly controlled. We have no clue what the affects could be. The internet is too young and content is only starting to mature now. We have proper infrastructure for game streaming (that's live 24/7), we have multiplayer games that never end, we have endless YT videos to watch. Even the places that promote discussion and imagination aren't safe like here on our forum. Just look at the results of this poll. Kids (and adults) are using phones to stay connected online all the time and it isn't good for us. I think we should all remember to take breaks from the internet. I am not saying you can't come on and get your daily content. I am just saying don't keep yourself connected all day.

PS Not really directing all of this at you Trik'Stari, your comment just lead me into a bit of a rant :)

I actually am labeling all addicts. The only way to quit something is to accept that part of the problem is your own desire, whether conscious or not, and then you have to WANT to quit. There isn't some magic pill. People can go through forced detox until their body no longer desires the stimuli (the object of the addiction) but the mind still will. It's both physical and mental, the issue is that people use the term addiction to blame instead of their own mental desire to continue using, whether they realize it or not.

And what about a child? Did they make a life decision or did they just do what they always do because they're kids. I am not just talking about internet. What about a crack head mother that gives crack to her child (simply by leaving it around). Is that child using addiction to shirk their own responsibility for what they do?

So do you think we should hide in the dark, let people become mindlessly addicted to something that should be a fun and good and good learning/entertainment tool, all so that we can turn around and judge them afterwards? Society sets them up to fail and then puts them down when they do. Hell of a world we live in. And here is me thinking the place is actually looking slightly more positive these days.

unless you're having some kind of a withdraw from not using the internet i wouldnt really count it as a addiction.

when someone finds something better to with their life odds are they'll get off the internet and do that.

just like games once you're bored of it or find something better you'll stop playing the old one as much.

just my take one this

I use the internet a lot of the time, But I wouldn't consider myself addicted. As I can go with out it and be fine.

Of course it's not like the end of the world if I'd have to go a week or even a couple weeks with out it, of course I might be bored initially but I'd find other things to do.
