Why does 30fps in vids look smooth? But when I game it looks terrible?

StareX

Seriously, I am playing Destiny on a PS3, right? I watch videos about the PS4 and see smooth gameplay.

Now the PS3 and the PS4 has the same frame rate, I am fine with the 30fps cap on the PS3, yeah? but it's so blurry and shit. However, how when I see youtubers play Destiny on PS4, with 30fps .. just like in PS3, have a smoother gameplay? Weird... now I don't own a PS4 so I can't really tell if it's YouTube doing this or if it's the PS4 doing this.

(Obviously it's not TV or Screen related.)

I might just be me but when I watch Destiny on Youtube it's horrible, you can really tell the difference.

lel, that's bs.

He explains why camera footage looks smoother than gameplay, because of natural motion blur.

The quality of artificial motionblur depends on the developer and isn't always bad or noticable.

On topic: I'd say you shouldn't compare the PS3 version against the PS4 version, i bet the older console can't really meet the 30fps limit and therefore stutters and throws visual artifacts at the user.

for me natural motion blur > Artificial

i can control the amount of motion blur on most games

they all suck

and why would any one want blur on a game .....

rather have stuttery 30 fps than 30 fps with blur

Motionblur is mostly used to generate the feeling of speed and it works pretty well when used correctly

Oh no.. the game is locked at 30fps at all times, I've tested it.

Well because, when you play 30fps with compressed 30hz it'll look smother rather than virtually playing 30fps on a 60hz environment.

There is a overlap. When watching a video there is this trick with motion focus that makes it look smoother, but giving it a raw test directly in front of your eyes, you start to notice some jiggers, repeated frames and clutter. It's more to do with your mind about what you are actually perceiving.

Here is a excellent video explaining. And in the description you'll see a fps comparison on the fly.

You're used to watching videos on youtube at 30fps so you don't expect more.

Alright, so if I play a game on 30fps on the PS3 and see jitters, and choppy frames.. will I see the same jitters and choppiness as if I was to play in PS4?

It doesn't matter what platform or system you play on, playing at capped 30fps with higher hz you might experience some kinda of jigger, because with 60hz as standard tvs and monitor you'll be refreshing the output imagine coming from the console TWICE, also considering the that 30fps is very minimum at playing smooth. 30fps is tolerable but human can still discern and notice the frames are not as fluid.

That's why most most that are aware of this are demanding for games and development to start hitting 60fps.

Early silent films had stated frame rates anywhere from 16 to 24 FPS,[4] but since the cameras were hand-cranked, the rate often changed during the scene to fit the mood. Projectionists could also change the frame rate in the theater by adjusting a rheostat controlling the voltage powering the film-carrying mechanism in the projector.[5] Silent films were often intended to be shown at higher frame rates than those used during filming.[6] These frame rates were enough for the sense of motion, but it was perceived as jerky motion. By using projectors with dual- and triple-blade shutters, the rate was multiplied two or three times as seen by the audience. Thomas Edison said that 46 frames per second was the minimum need by the visual cortex: "Anything less will strain the eye."[7][8] In the mid to late 1920s, the frame rate for silent films increased to between 20 and 26 FPS.[7]

When sound film was introduced in 1926, variations in film speed were no longer tolerated as the human ear is more sensitive to changes in audio frequency. Many theaters had shown silent films at 22 to 26 FPS which is why 24 FPS was chosen for sound. From 1927 to 1930, as various studios updated equipment, the rate of 24 FPS became standard for 35 mm sound film.[9] At 24 FPS the film travels through the projector at a rate of 456 millimetres (18.0 in) per second. This allowed for simple two-blade shutters to give a projected series of images at 48 per second, satisfying Edison's recommendation. Many modern 35 mm film projectors use three-blade shutters to give 72 images per second—each frame is flashed on screen three times.[7]
