My OnePlus One Review (64GB Black) - with pictures

I know there are two or three reviews of this device already, but I really felt like I needed to give my opinion on this device. I'll try and go as in depth as I can!

So I only found out about this phone a few weeks back when it was talked about on the WAN show. I got interested and started looking on this forum for more info about it. I heard about the price from somebody (I believe it was @ShadowCaptain :)), and at that point I was sold - I knew exactly what my next smartphone would be, regardless of what the iPhone 6 turned out to be! I managed to get hold of an invite on this forum, a week or so later. About 4 days after that, the phone was shipped to me in the UK :D

Just by looking at the packaging, you can see how focused on design the OnePlus team are. The box and its contents are very minimalist and, with a white and red colour scheme, visually striking. I opened it up and was greeted with the device. Coming from an htc One, this thing was HUGE in comparison. Aside from the device itself, in the box you get a unique looking USB to micro USB cable for charging and data transfer, as well as a SIM eject tool with a convenient pouch for it that can be attached to a keyring. I'll probably not need it as I don't hotswap SIMs often, but I put it on my keyring anyway just because the thing looks awesome :D

The packaging for the packaging. It was very much about box-ception with this phone!

The box for the device itself. Very pretty; we haven't even got to the phone yet!

15140908002_3a31777891_b.jpg

It was the little things, like the SIM eject holder and this tab with some string attached, used to open the box, that really makes the device seem premium.

Separate to the device box, you also get a box for the charger. Equally as carefully packaged, the charger feels solid and is great at doing what it was designed to :P

DESIGN

Now onto the main event - the phone itself. I don't think this even needs explaining: the OnePlus One is beautiful. In a market full of unoriginal slate looking rectangles with rounded edges, OnePlus have managed to set their device aside from the rest of the competition, which I applaud them for. When first gripping the device, the first thing you notice is the texture of the sandstone black finish. It really is completely different to any other mobile I've held. If you want to imagine what the back feels like, it's almost like a softer emery board. With a subtle curve, it grips the hand comfortably, doesn't pick up fingerprints and is understated. What more could you ask for? The only break in this finish is the rear camera, which is ever so slightly raised at the top of the device. This doesn't make it rock on a flat surface though, and as long as you just give the surface you're placing it on a quick brush with your hand it's doubtful the lens will ever scratch. Holding another device like my old htc One feels very strange now - the bareness and smoothness of the metal almost feel slippery now. And that's a good thing, since it makes the OPO feel more premium in comparison.

15141256515_9711dd3989_b.jpg

I've always admired a sexy looking rear end...  B)

If you thought the back looked good, wait till you see the front! A single flat panel of Gorilla Glass covers the 5.5" 1920x1080 IPS display, giving it a PPI of just over 400. beneath the display there are capacitive buttons for navigating Android, and above it is a speaker grille which is flush with the display; a nice touch. To the left of that is an RGB LED indicator used for notifications as well as a proximity sensor and a 4MP front facing camera. The screen is slightly raised from the the edge of the phone, surrounded by a chrome bezel. I could just sit at my desk and admire the beauty of this thing all day... I'm a sucker for a clean, minimalist look, and man have OnePlus got it right with their first flagship.

15140903442_09852b6e9a_b.jpg

The sides of the phone house a lock button on the right edge, a volume rocker on the left, a 3.5mm jack on the top and a pinhole mic and dual speakers on the bottom. The buttons are almost perfect - they require just the right amount of pressure to actuate and are easy to feel for, but still with one handed use, I can see some people accidentally pressing the volume rocker. However, I'm left handed and this isn't an issue for me in one handed use. The perks of being a leftie :D

And if you thought the front was pretty on its own, wait until you turn the display on. It's nice and sharp without looking too harsh like some displays can. Saturation and contrast are great and colours pop without looking unnatural, and I was lucky enough not to receive a unit with a yellow tint (which I think OnePlus have now ironed out of the units they're shipping). The display is just right for content consumption. I regularly keep up with my favourite Twitch streamers, and this display allows me to read the text on cards in Hearthstone as well as see damage counters easily in MOBAs. I've gotten used to the screen size now - holding my OnePlus One is, to my htc One, what my htc was to my iPhone 5, when I bought it about 14 months ago.

15118269426_019f38ebee_b.jpg

The display really is stunning.

15140882832_fbe05332e5_b.jpg

It's also huge compared to my htc One!

USAGE

I had previously installed Cyanogenmod on my htc One, so I knew my way around the device immediately. The experience is really smooth - I haven't encountered a single slowdown in the week I've had the phone. The launcher is nicely customisable. You can change scroll effects, live wallpapers and widgets - pretty standard nowadays though. You get a few extras with the phone as well, such as Screencast - an app that lets you capture the screen of the device and include voice recording too. It works nicely and is a cool feature.

The Cyanogenmod team have also introduced a theme store where you can purchase themes for your phone which is cool. Honestly though, I like the stock hexo theme. My htc One used to run the flux theme, and I find myself switching the themes now and again.

Enough about the software though - time for my thoughts on using it. The phone has never been hot to the touch in my use, which my htc One used to do a lot, especially in navigation. I'm pretty sure the enclosure got to about 40C on a hot day once!

Typing on the phone has been an interesting experience, actually. The larger screen certainly makes hitting keys easier, and trying to type on a smaller phone like the 4" iPhone 5 (which I do often since my family run into trouble with their tech often :/) is quite tricky now. However, I've found the screen not to be as sensitive as I would like. I installed swiftkey as soon as I got the phone, but after a day, I uninstalled it, since it was simply not registering what I was typing. It often changed words like "of" to "is" and some three letter words didn't even get typed. Using the google keyboard has been a much nicer experience, and I actually prefer its aesthetic compared to swiftkey's skins. I guess whatever works best, eh?

Calls have been great. The earpiece is certainly high quality and people have said I sound fine on their end. I haven't had a dropped call, but sometimes they take some time to connect.

Audio is also pleasant. I use some Audio Technica ATH-M50Xs and they sound great with the OPO - better, in fact, than my htc One. Nice crips highs, strong vocals and decent volume. I've been using Play Music and Spotify. The rear speakers are also decent, but lack the low end that the htc One had. Also, to move back to a phone without front facing speakers did make me sad - but you can still hear music or video pretty well with them.

My favourite features so far have been the RGB LED which is super handy for checking which app or which person you have a notification from. I've chosen lots of colours, from burnt orange, to cyan, to magenta, to lime green and pale pink, and it really is quite diverse. Coming from the htc One, I've been used to hardware android buttons instead of software ones, and I like that you have a choice. I personally don't like the software ones because of the extra screen space it takes up, but it comes in handy now and again since, as I mentioned before, I'm left handed, and I can't reach the hardware "back" button with my thumb, but I can switch the software buttons around allowing me to reach it. I haven't really used the gestures. I'll explain why later.

Something I've also enjoyed is the battery life. I can easily get through two days with this thing, and that from sending about 100 or so texts a day, making 2 or 3 calls, checking social networks occaisionally and watching about 30-60 minutes of streamed video (on wifi). After a day I'm left with about 51-56% and by the evening of the next day I plug it in. The One also charges incredibly quickly as well. It takes about 1.5 hours to get to 90%, then another 30 minutes to fully charge.

CAMERA

The weather here in England has been abismal lately, and there hasn't been a chance to take some nice pictures with the OnePlus One's camera. And when there has been a good opportunity, I've been busy :( Regardless, from what I've tried of it, the 13MP sensor is pretty good. It doesn't rival my DSLR in terms of image quality, but it has the ease of use. I found there is a bit of shutter delay, but perhaps there is something I can change to fix that. The slow shutter works nicely, and I got a nice shot of my Quickfire TK using the 8 second speed:

15015094747_510b7ee696_b.jpg

I'll add some other shots, and some video, once the weather is nicer :)

SLIGHT NEGATIVES

Despite how incredible the OnePlus One is, I have had a few niggles about it. Number one on the list is signal strength. I had swapped my SIM from my htc One sine the OPO is SIM unlocked. But in the same place I consistently get 1-2 bars less, which is a shame. Out and about, it's fine - in town or in a shopping centre the signal is great and speeds are fine. It's just at home where it suffers. Hopefully once my carrier, 3, rolls out LTE in my area the signal will improve.

Something else that annoys me to this day on most Android phones is volume control. Why is it still in steps? I want to be able to set the level to any value I choose, not out of 7 (which is nowhere near granular enough). This is basic functionality that even the iPhone achieves, so why can't it be a thing on Android?

I also had a bad experience at one point with gestures. On a Tuesday night I go out dancing with a friend of mine (it's a long story how I ended up doing it, but it's great fun), and I keep my phone in my pocket in case I get an emergency call from home or something else. With the OPO, I pulled it out and noticed it was doing all sorts of things! It had changed the language to something like Portuguese (which I can thankfully read slightly from my Spanish classes), started playing music on Spotify, had called a random number and sent a text. At the time, I had no idea what had caused it, and the device managed to completely drain its battery halfway through the evening. I later discovered it was because double tap to wake was enabled, and so were the media gestures. Annoying. The solution is to turn the phone so the screen is facing away from my leg, but that's pretty uncomfortable. It's a shame, because with headphones having a lack of inline controls for Android devices, those gestures are handy.

Something else I've been having problems with lately is auto rotate. Once or twice the phone has completely ignored an orientation change, and other times you just really have to tell it that it's changing orientation by holding it in a vertical plane and then tilting it. Again, it's annoying, and I do believe it's a software bug since closing an app and reopening it fixes the issue. Hopefully the CM team will get that fixed!

CONCLUSION

Are these negatives enough to stop me recommending the phone? No. For the asking price, this phone is simply phenomenal. For the price of a new iPhone 4S on a SIM free contract, you can get this flagship device that matches the competition in specs and looks better doing it. I don't think there's a more visually striking device on the market right now, and even with the iPhone 6/6+ unveiled (which I thought was quite lacklustre in terms of design, those bands on the back are quite tacky), the One is still king. People have seen me using it and have asked what phone it is - of course, I have to remember that this phone is still pretty much invisible to the general public. It's still only the techies among us that are in the know ;) Their next remark is along the lines of "it's huge!" or "how much was it?" They are astonished when they hear the answer to the second question! It's really nice to be owning a device that not many other people have and is unique - that's what I love about the OnePlus One.

For a functional, customiseable, beautiful and extremely competitive product, I really don't think you can go wrong with the OnePlus One.

Thanks for taking the time to read my review! Please let me know what you thought - constructive criticism is appreciated :)

For the price that you can pick up the 64GB model, I definitely think so too! :D

I'm waiting for the OnePlus Two

I guess we have to hope that OnePlus can count to three then... :P

Just curious, what features are you waiting for that have stopped you buying the OPO?

That part about the iPhone 4 is not entirely true... I can pick up a new iPhone 4 for around £70-100 at the local carphone warehouse.

Whoops, I meant an iPhone 4S... It was a lot of text - there was bound to be a mistake in there!

I can't think of another place that you could pick one up now Apple doesn't sell them anymore.

Thanks :) Ah, I guess you're lucky! You could imagine though that if you're dancing it's bound to find a double tap at some point though. :)

I thought the screen size was pretty big too, but when I held the device I didn't say "this feel big' I felt a lot less cramped. It felt great in the hand too, but I have bigger sized hands.

Well it's actually cheaper than that 4S! I got it for £287, including express shipping. Definitely worth it, considering my htc One was £320 second hand and my iPhone 5 was £600...

As for the screen, I know what you mean. I thought the same thing when I bought it, but I'm really pleased with it. It is harder to use one handed than something like an iPhone 5, but it's made up for in great content consumption and ease of typing with two hands. With one hand I can reach 9/10ths of the way to the other side, and I'm not really tall so my fingers aren't long. If you're interested, I'll be giving away invites when I get them :)

I made the switch last month as mentioned before. It's fun  phone.

Camera and Video recording needs a hell of a lot of work though, given that the Chinese ColorOS has no limits on recording, and both video and photo quality are superior.

Also anyone with a One Plus should report any OS issues and bugs here:

The only android device I currently own (other than my Huawei g300 spare) is my nvidia shield

Wouldnt mind an android phone just to play around with and it has some decent hardware with a low cost

How are you finding the SHIELD? Is it the tablet, because I've been rather itching to try that device.
