to begin f@h, but whats the point?

like title says, i think it sounds like something neat to do and from what i know you can just leave your pc on during the day and it will fold? if so id just leave it on while im at school but i really dont understand the point. is it similar to doge coin mining and stuff like that?

Folding and mining are two completely different things.

Folding is giving Standford your computer's resources for them to figure protein simulations

http://folding.stanford.edu/ here is a good place to start on what Folding is.

CPU: Intel core i5 3570 Motherboard: Gigabyte-H77-DS3H Case: Fractal Design Define R4 Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB  GPU: MSI Radeon HD 7950 Twin Frozr III Cooler: CM Hyper 212 Evo RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB  PSU: Seasonic G Series 550W

I was hoping for some sort of existential thread here

you do it to basically help researches create a botnet to do calculations, originally protein folding (hence fold @home) for medical advancements, but I believe there have since been other offshoots.

and from what i understand theres some sort of point/ranking system? if so i think itd be quite addicting to earn ze pointz ^_^

I mean, yeah, there is, but personally I always thought it was stupid.

yes for each work unit that you do, you get a certain amount of points and there is a leader board for the world and we have a leader board for the LTT forums.

I wouldn't even try with the blade, and depends on what old desktop you have.

and points are only worth something if they get you somewhere, no?

Maybe compete with friends or something of the like.

most likely, It's going to be able to a long and slow process with the your gear, Blade and old desktop. For your blade you probably could use the Chrome folding app, you're still folding but it would be with smaller units that won't take as long, but you will get less points.

I've found that usually leads to disappointment and depression.

i fear that having the blade's cpu under so much load while folding would be bad for it, any chance im right or am i being over protective of my baby?

For a laptop yes, generally it's not the best idea to fold on a laptop.

Personally I wouldn't fold unless you believe in what you are doing. If you don't really care about the research (which is fine) don't do it. But folding for points is just kind of pointless since folding will wear your hardware down considerably and it will cost a lot on your power bill(if you are using your GPU).

I mean, yeah, there is, but personally I always thought it was stupid.

why would you say that? it creates healthy competition, motivates people, bonds the community and gives you some sense of scale for the project, makes the whole thing more engaging, i very much doubt folding would be as big as it is if they didn't have any form of a point system, it's obviously beneficial to the folding project, the more computing power the better, they even say on their site that the point/ranking system is a vital part of any distributed computing project. You yourself can think points are pointless, well no problem, just fold anonymously, for those who do want it, it's beneficial to the folding project as a whole to grab those people.

and to the op, it's for medical research, science is good, progress is good, knowledge is awesome, you should support it.

its on my old pc so if the hardware gets smashed in the process then its whatever but yeh i dont think the power bill will be that much more :P i havent left it on for more than 3 hours at a time while folding

i'm just saying it isn't pointless even if you wouldn't care about stats and the like, and i honestly wasn't familiar with what IMO meant before i googled it right now :P.

FYI - for laptops and olders systems, using the Chrome Folding app is a great alternative. Uses less power and produces less heat on low then the full client does and you are still contributing.
