HTC One M8 with Windows Phone 8.1

NCIX: http://bit.ly/1uEnkBd

Amazon: http://geni.us/hO4

HTC sent over their One M8 - this time equipped with Windows Phone 8.1. A year and a half ago Linus tested Windows Phone for a month and decided that it really couldn't compare to iOS or Android for enthusiast use. Has his opinion changed after using the One M8?

inb4 "eww windows phone"

Honestly it's a great choice for someone who wants to upgrade from a WP7 device but doesn't want to have to move platforms and get used to a whole new OS

Also, why an NCIX link if it's Verizon exclusive?

I got that all the time when I was an iPhone user, mainly it came from Android users.

I then got my 920, and still got that all the time, mainly from Android users.

If WP8 is missing stuff, I clearly don't give enough damns about it. I'm marginally hardcore in how I get my tech (more towards cameras if anything), but when it comes to phones?

1. Built like tank?

2. Battery like tank?

3. Does it have Whatsapp?

I swear my toaster could fulfill those 3 things these days, cause thats all I personally care about. I get that more "hardcore" enthusiasts need XYZ, but plenty of people will only ever used ABC, despite buying the thing based on A-Z.

I can already guess Linus banging on about the lack of apps and how much superior overall android is. As usual..

From the WAN show I'm assuming linus doesn't like WP8.1. Coming from android with such a large app store and customisability, I can see why to a degree, but with 2 years of experience with WP8, I've found if there isn't an official app, the 3rd party one is usually very good quality anyway, because there's always 3rd party apps. For example, snapchat isn't on WP8, so I use 6snap instead. I have snapchat on my iPad, but I prefer the one on my phone because some of the features are considerably better. I also really like the tile layout, and find live tiles are a very good thing for me with messages and for weather etc. but of course it's down to opinion on those.

Now that an android company has had the balls to release their flagship device on WP as well as android, and it being so good hardware-wise, I think I may try to get this phone if it becomes available in the UK soon.

at 5:00 in the video linus has a lot of Bible verses. wow! Impressive. I can't even get myself to do that.

and yet again 8.1 disappoints me.

I have a Windows phone for work and I hate it. From the "People" app which lists your contacts and tries to integrate it with social networks poorly, to the calendar which before the 8.1 update had no week view! That's the only view I ever use on my calendar! The 8.1 update improved a lot of things and made the experience tolerable, but it's only just deserving of the "Better than useless" award now. Before that it was just poop wrapped in poop icing with poop filling in the middle. I only use it because I have to.

I own a Windows Phone 8.1 device and is super nice. Yes, not too many apps and nice games, but is fast on low end devices, and looks nice. I mean, i love those tiles. :D.

I am not an enthusiats, i own a phone to talk send a message and browse the web. For enthusiasts there is Android, for normal people who don't want a feature-phone but want to have some basic stuff but can't afford an iPhone, Windows Phone is great.

I've had the HTC WP 8x for a year now, and I agree with you that it's not a great enthusiast platform, but I prefer it way over any iOS device I've tried.  I have owned iPhones and currently own a 4th gen iPod touch that I only keep around in case I need an app that is only developed for iOS.  The OS, to me, is just nicer and easier to use.  The home screen tells you everything you need to know without even needing to unlock the phone (any missed calls, any texts, how many unchecked emails in each account, soonest calendar appointment, time, date, etc).  I never had that functionality with my iPhone or iPod.

I guess it all just comes down to what you use it for.  I generally have a laptop with me when I know I'll need the functionality of a PC.  With my phone, I pretty much only use it to call, text, check email, facebook, twitter, and reddit, or use the GPS.  I also got it cheap when it was brand new ($100), and it still works like new a year later, so there's that.  The camera on it is also pretty damn good for macro shots.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm not saying Windows Phone is better than Andriod or iOS exclusively.  I'm just saying it's better for me, and there's plenty of other people who feel the same way.

Fuck Microsoft. Quite frankly, I don't want them to gain any market share. Fuck them and their fucking anti-competitive bullshit.

Like any phone and any OS WP8 serves it's purpose for those who like it. When WP8 came out I got a Lumia and while over-all I liked it, some issues that persisted early on in the life of the OS (specifically audio related ones) made me find a different phone. However when this phone shows up on AT&T I'm going to seriously consider switching back. I love my M7, enough that I intend to stay with HTC phones for a while and WP8 offers me everything I truly need with a phone. I use my phone to text, make calls, occasionally take pictures, and listen to something like 100 hours worth of books every month. Beyond that I might play the occasional game or watch a random Youtube video once in a blue moon on it. By the time the WP8 version of the M8 hits other networks my M7 will be at a fairly cheap pay off point for me and I can get it with no hassle.

Because Apple and Google are so well known for being friendly with competition.....

Actually it's because YouTube forces you to make a video private before you can schedule it for release at a later time. Pretty silly practice.

Pricing and discussion thread needs to be up when the video posts, so it goes up earlier than the video goes public.

Not an ideal release strategy, but sometimes it has to be done.

So, that is what Microsoft compromised our Desktop experience with that stupid metro UI for? Great, now we have a shitty desktop UI (at least on Win8/8.1) and a shitty phone OS. Couldn't you just concentrate on one platform at a time and then make it like not shitty, Microsoft? That would be great.
