Why wouldn't they name it the R9 275/x

Because it's a 280 that's using a slightly modified architecture.

What would you put instead? "Linus stares at R9 285" certainly isn't correct :P

It is one R9 285, therefore it is an R9 285, no?

Idk, maybe I'm just tired.

With all the changes made to its memory (As shown in the video), they seem to have just made it more efficient than the 280. I like it. :)

english natives dont know rules lmao

its AN because you pronounce R as "arrr" so its starts with "a" sound. Anything that starts with a should use AN. Like an apple.

.

Everything else is A.

Yeah, that's improper...

still at an r sounds funny, at a r seems more natural than an. But "an" technically according to grammar correct. There are something that just flow with the use an or a but that statement doesn't flow anyway.

Oh, and before any a e i o u sound is also an, forgot about that.

Well it sounds right to me because its easier to pronounce. Its same as trying to say a apple.  or a umbrella. Weird.

I'm curious about how you pronounce "R9" for it to sound funny. Linus pronounces it "Arr Nine", I pronounce it "Arr Nine" and so do most of the other people in the thread by the sounds of it. Infact I've never heard anyone say "rrr Nine" so I assume that most people pronounce it with a vowel sound as does Linus. So it's clearly "an R9" because if you smash "a" before it you end up saying "uh uh" which is a bit broken. Once you've said "uh uh" it's not long before I'll start looking at you as if you're one of those apes in the monolith scene from 2001.

Now if we were talking about H and not R? Yeah, THEN there'd be cause for argument. Hell I don't even know which one sounds right in my own head before H. Plus even if I did, and sometimes I do, I really don't care enough to call someone out for "doing it wrong". It's not like Linus said he "could care less" or something ;)

I seemed to have missed 280 vs 285 vs 280x performance comparison chart.

Anyone who has a sister hates the fact that his sister isn't Kasugano Sora.
Anyone who does not have a sister hates the fact that Kasugano Sora isn't his sister.
I'm not insulting anyone; I'm just being condescending. There is a difference, you see...

Use AN before words such as "hour" which sound like they start with a vowel even if the first letter is a consonant. Also use AN before letters and numbers which sound like they begin with a vowel, such as "F" or "8". Remember, it is the sound not the spelling which is important. For example, "F" is pronounced "eff" like it starts with an "E".

Examples:

  • I only have an hour for lunch. Sounds like "au-er".
  • Does his name begin with an "F"? Sounds like "eff".

I knew it was "technically" right but just didn't sound right to me. as I say it again, At an ARRR (9) sounds really strange.

last time I'm explaining myself, call me crazy or out to lunch but I don't care.

Well Linus pronounced it "arr nine" so it would have been odd for it to be written down as if it didn't have a vowel sound. Although I do say this as someone with an Australian accent. So pretty much everything I say has a vowel drone humming along in the background as I needlessly shorten every word.... we're like a whole country endlessly doing impressions of the Fonz...

edit: on topic, this card looks like a good deal based on some of the local pricing. An XFX R9 280 3GB is $300AU and equivalent R9 285 with 2GB is $280. So $20 less for more features and similar performance at a lower power consumption. Plus at 1080p the extra RAM doesn't really matter. Pretty damn good value 1080p card....
