Best laptop?

MuffinsOfGump
Go to solution Solved by BudgetEngineer,

I was thinking of the MacBook Pro because then I could also edit and make content off of it. But I could also get a Windows laptop and get Adobe Premiere, and the works. What do you guys think of Mac vs Windows for content creation for beginners? One more thing, I did look at the game selection for Mac and it does seem to be lacking, also all the games I already have purchased on Steam for Windows wouldn't be accessable.

I have the GS60 Ghost Pro so I'm a bit biased but my sister has the 13" retina MBP. I've seen both machines work well for content creation. She's a graphic design student and I do short documentaries and tons of photos. Get yourself well acquainted with the Adobe ecosystem for content creation and the OS doesn't matter, it's insanely powerful no matter which you choose. The whole "Macs are better for content creation" thing is nonsense except for Mac-specific applications (music production, for example, has a lot of Mac specific applications).

Just know you get more performance per dollar with a PC that has dedicated graphics and CUDA acceleration vs. a mbp with just integrated (though iris pro) graphics. If you're going to get into color work having a good GPU is essential. And PC's have upgradeability in the memory and storage departments severely lacking in Macs at the moment. If you have a lot of Windows games purchased, I would factor that into the cost of getting a Mac as well.

Hey everyone what do you think would be a good laptop for light gaming like League of Legends and Diablo 3, school work, some music playing and DJing, and interweb browsing. Budget is around 2000 CAD because I really have no idea on laptops :P Thanks everyone!

@MuffinsOfGump What screen size do you prefer? Do you want a regular-sized laptop, or something thin?

2000 CAD is a pretty high budget. If you only want to do light gaming, then Iris Pro integrated graphics would be fine, and you could get a Macbook Pro Retina. Even if you don't like OS X, you should be able to install Windows on it.

If you'd like to play newer, more graphically intensive games on your laptop, then you could afford laptops with a GTX 880M(although they'll probably be somewhere around 6-8 pounds in weight) like the Asus G750JZ or Sager NP8258-S.

If you want something thinner, you'll pay a bit of a price premium and you won't be able to do any better than a GTX 870M, but that's still a decent GPU.

How is the game selection for Mac? I was looking at a Macbook Pro today, it seemed nice, and I saw a Asus ROG too, seemed nice.

Well LoL and Diablo 3 should be available on Mac. But overall, only a fraction of the games available on Windows are available on a Mac. Steam should have a section of games for Apple users, you can see what the selection is like there.

I've never owned a gaming laptop but I do know that Sager tends to have the best prices for the components you get.

What kind of content creation are we talking about? If you mean about making game-related Youtube videos, then I think you might want to stick with the OS that has more games available for it, to give your channel some more variety if it needs it. Still, you could always install Windows on your Macbook Pro. But as for what OS has the best software available for beginners, I really wouldn't know.

Thank you :) that was pretty much the exact explanation I was looking for :) Thank you
