Just built my new system, what do I do next?

Jasss22

I just finished putting the hardware together, started the pc, installed the OS, and updated the software for everything. I heard you need to run a burn-in test and shred your memory. Is that true, if so how would I do it? and what else do I need to do?

P.S. I will upload the pictures later for anyone who cares.

Some tests you can do are MSI kombustor, Prime 95, maybe even Unigine: Valley Benchmark. To be honest i didnt really do that many tests and it doesnt really matter. Use the pc as normal and see what happens. Time will tell i guess.

It is good to "burn in" your CPU so you know your cooler can handle it as well as to make sure everything is stable. I would highly recommend you do such.

I didn't do anything apart from stress test my CPU for like an hour. She runs like a beauty!

If you are running at stock clocks then i don't think that a burn in is necessary? so just load up a game or whatever and play? if you are worried then get a temperature monitor and check it occasionally.

Basic benchmark software like 3Dmark will do nicely. You only need to know if ram is ok and that cables are tight. Also get some software to shpw temps and check that cooler is tight and working.

Prime 95 should not be used with haswell processors.  http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/62223-haswell-and-prime95/

And since he didn't specify what processor is using, is a bad idea to recommend him to use prime.

edit

Well in his profile says he has an i7-4930K, so it is a very bad idea to recommend him prime 95.

Now that you've built a new machine, there is literally only one thing you should, and should be allowed, to do.

Go to town on that sucker!!!!

@Jasss22

Turn on some music and start chanting....."I just built a PC,....I just built a PC"

jk

Now make sure all drivers are installed, make sure you have a proper Internet Security program with a  robust Firewall, i like Outpost, Webroot, Kaspersky, Depending on the CPU you will want to use the relevant stress testing program to asses system stability and then use your most used and demanding program and game for stability as well, then just enjoy your PC and don't forget to chant "I just build a PC, I just built a PC" through the window at home and while driving or being driven by someone. :P

Nice! Specs? Pics?

A fun thing to do with new systems is install some games that your old system struggled with, and watch your new rig crush them. It's the most satisfying thing in the world.

Overclock the system, and leave valley on for 6 straight hours with the room sealed and get back to the nice tropical temp. (experience)

That's Ivy Bridge-E, not Haswell.

36 hrs of crysis 3 on utlra settings should test it well enough. Honestly I have a very similar set up to you and I didn't do any special burn in, I loaded some temp monitor programs and then proceeded to overclock and then do some gaming and see how it went lol.

Sit back, enjoy a long, pleasurable exhale, then start watching Linus videos and planning your next rig.
