this should be an interesting debate.....the only cards I have any firsthand experience with are the 7770 radeon and the gtx 780...so between those two the 780 lol

With today's technology I often wonder why we don't have colonies on the moon or Mars. Then I go to Wal Mart for 5 minutes and realize the vast majority of the human populace isn't ready for such things.

IDK, I remember the GTX 460 being a pretty big deal. Also the 6950 had quite a great price-performance that I don't think has been matched.

8800 GTS was also high up there I think

7800 GTX maybe?

5850>7950 really WOW'd me.

but so did the ATI 9700PRO & the 8800GTS/GTX cards.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

my 8800GTX melted my face off several times before I ripped BFG's mickey mouse cooler off and threw on an accelero xtreme 8800 edition, and then it melted the faces off enemies in game.

Going to say the G92 gpu based cards.  Nvidia began their milking-the-gpu-for-all-it's-worth-through-more-than-one-generation thinking, as it powered the 8800, 9800 series as well as the 250.

 

I'd also say a tesla or something because they're awesome at compute stuff

I have to agree. The 8800GT was particularly great for its time. It was like, 80+% of the performance of an 8800GTX for like, less than or about half the price. It was a really solid card all around, especially bang for the buck.

 

I remember the 4850 I replaced it with (it died prematurely due to me accidentally stabbing the back of it with a razor knife trying to cut a cable tie... You have to learn sometime) was also particularly interesting as it had a little more advanced video decoding hardware, and during this time if you had a bluray drive (as I did) you needed the most advanced video decoder you could get as the CPU's of the time did struggle with it. Both of those were good cards, and probably my favorites looking back. They were also single slot, which is something that just doesn't happen anymore.

The Radeon 7950, because you could sell them for more than twice as much for what you paid originally 10 months ago, no other graphics card has appreciated in value like it.  But that chart never goes up and to the right all the rime, it did come down and to the right.

Oh I like you!

I am really hoping for a Broadwell HD graphics with iris to be available for the desktop (as per a wccf article @Askew ).  I have no intention of giving $300 to either AMD or Nvidia for a mid-range card if I can avoid it.

I'm holding off my next build for it.
