4K/1440p GPU upgrade for a non-SLI supporting rig

hamiltus
Go to solution Solved by teddyteddyteddy,

A 290 or 290x is your best bet, great pricing right now too. Plus it sounds like you ahve a crossfire capable board.

290 or 290x crossfire would not work well on that motherboard because the second pci slot only runs in x4 mode.  with higher end gpu's, the pci slots should run at 8x each.

Since you don't want anything amd, you should either get a 780 or 780ti for 1440p.  I saw an asus 780ti that was only about $530 in the hot deals section just a few minutes ago

Looking at moving from my trusty old 20" 1680x1050 monitor to something with a few more pixels like the Asus PB287Q or their ROG Swift.

My problem is my current rig is a GTX 670 based system on a unsupported board for SLI, It's a Gigabyte Z77-DS3H, so my question is which gpu solution is best for a guy like me without going crazy on the wallet, bearing in mind my CPU is an i5 3570K, to jump into either 4K or 1440p 144Hz gaming ?

  • A Dual GPU card like the Asus GTX 760 Mars ?? Is it like the 690 where it has its own internal SLI bridge ?
  • A 6GB GTX 780 ? Would the extra VRAM be worth the cost ?
  • Or just going all out on a GTX 780 Ti ?

Thanks in advance for the help ! FYI, bear in mind I'm aware of the offerings from the team AMD but I'm about to get an Nvidia Shield Tablet so I'd like to stay with the green team please.

4k gaming REQUIERES SLI/Xfire to work.

A single 290/780Ti can handle 1440p, although probably not at 144hz--except in light games.

your best bet would be an R9 295x2 for 1440p at 144hz.

but what's best on a non-SLI motherboard ? Can't afford a full platform upgrade yet. Only 2 years old now.

780 TI will do everything apart from 4K and is more powerful than the rest.

but what's best on a non-SLI motherboard ?

Well, 4K is impossible.

1440p @ 144hz will be doable with a 290/780/780Ti at lower (not low, just not ultra) settings and/or on lighter games. To get away with 1440p @ 144hz high settings, you'll need to look at something like an R9 295x2.

I'm sure it would but I'm tied into the Green team sadly :(

1440p because you can't afford a card that can run 4k, not to mention 4k monitors are also quite expensive.

GTX780Ti or R9 290x. Since you apparently need to stay green, then 780Ti.

AMD cards shine at higher resolutions, I would go with a 290 or 290x if i would play at 4k.

Soooo, if I didn't want to use Nvidia Gamestream, 290 is better ?

Only reason why I'm with Nvidia plus I'm a fan of GeForce Experience.

yes 290 all the way, 290! NOT 290x. 290x costs more and isnt worth it so jsut a 290 will be fine, plus they go areound 370 USD wich is around 100 USD cheaper than a 780 and better high res performance.

Ok. Is 4x PCI-e really that bad ? Also what about a 6GB 780 ? I'm in Europe BTW

Didnt notice the 4x, but still a 290 or 780ti, depends on what you want to pay. Personally, the 780ti si not worth the money. But there is a good deal on one in the hot deals if you want one.

Ok good to know, and lastly which of these four is best for both gaming and content creation :

  • Asus PB278Q 1440p (650 Euros)
  • Asus PB287Q 4K (same price here in europe as the PB278Q)
  • Asus ROG Swift (800 Euros)
  • LG 29UM65 (350 Euros)

for 1440p, the 6gb might be a little better, but if the price difference is really big, then you might be better off with just a normal 780

Don't get the 4k one, a single gpu won't be able to run games on it.

I wouldn't get the LG, because it's only 1080p...  For content creation, whether that means video editing, audio production, or what, more vertical pixels more important than more horizontal pixels... at least in my personal experience.

if you want the good, accurate colors of a nice ips display, get the PB278Q.  If you would prefer a faster refresh rate with gsync for gaming(even though a single 780 won't run most games at that high of an fps), get the ROG swift.

Edit: whoops, pb278q is pls display not ips, still better than tn though

for 2160p it's essentially required to get multiple cards I'd suggest 2x290(and all boards support crossfire nowadays)... Screw the shield you haven't bought it yet... and 760 Mars or 690 I don't think they'd cut it... for the RoG swift (1440p@144hz) I'd suggest the 780ti or 690; And No 6GB 780s are just rip offs the extra Vram is rarely used and excessive.
