Will Nvidia SLI Affect Temperatures ?

Peter Eric

Hello and thanks for your support .

Will Nvidia Sli Decrease the Temperatures of 2 Gtx Cards because there will be less workload on each Card if it wasn't cooled by stock cooler (Ex:Twin Frozr ) ?

Or Will it Increase the Temperatures of Them because there will be 2 Cards instead of One in Your Computer producing heat  ?

Thanks in advance ,

Top card normally runs hotter if you use aftermarket coolers that dump all the heat into the case, if you use reference blower coolers it shouldn't make much difference as all the heat gets blown straight out.

it depends i run 2 GPUs and the top one gets hotter but if you set a FPS cap yes it will

This is how it works for the most part:

On SLI supported games, the two cards share the load (for the most part) instead of one card taking all of it. Depending on the game, this could decrease GPU fan noise but increase heat output from the case.

For example: if you have two 780's in SLI config and you're playing a not-so-very-demanding game like Call of Duty, your GPU fans will not be as loud as they would with a single card config, but since there are two cards in the case it will increase heat output.

Depending on the cooler style, the heat will either be pushed out the back of the case via the card itself (blower-style) or it will be pushed into the case for the case fans to take care of (aftermarket coolers like the ACX cooler from EVGA).

That being said, power consumption is also something that practically doubles, so you'll need a beefy PSU to run the whole system.

What.

In SLI (or Crossfire for that matter), the data is mirrored onto both cards. They don't share the load. That's why you get.more performance.

You can't use games like CoD to compare because:

1) They are freaking console ports, and are poorly optimized for PC.

2) Most of the CoD games don't support multi-GPU, so the second card just sits there idling fiddling its thumb.

3) They are more CPU bound games.

SLI will means you have another heat generating piece of device in your system. It will not reduce temperatures.

From the wikipedia page that has a more broad definition than Nvidia's own website:

"SLI allows two, three, or four graphics processing units (GPUs) to share the workload when rendering real-time 3D computer graphics. Ideally, identical GPUs are installed on the motherboard that contains enough PCI-Express slots, set up in a master-slave configuration. All graphics cards are given an equal workload to render, but the final output of each card is sent to the master card via a connector called the SLI Bridge. An example, in a two graphics card setup, the master works on the top half of the scene, the slave the bottom half. Once the slave is done, it sends its render to the master to combine into one image before sending it to the monitor."

I used Call of Duty for a specific example. Please re-read my post.

Actually if you cap the frame rate to monitors refresh rate (60hz), the cards run cooler that one card alone, due to the shared workload.....

In theory your cards should last longer too, due to them not having too work at full load to get 60fps...

I can definitely say if you're not dumping extra heat into the case (heating up everything) then SLI cards will run cooler than 1 card unless the SLI cards are doing double the framerate. Usually to acquire the desired framerate (or just in some games) the SLI utilization will cap out at 60-80%. In this case, each card will run cooler/generate less heat than if they were both at 99% straight. The TOTAL heat produced will be higher than with 1 card, of course... but like I said, if you're getting rid of that heat somewhere, it won't be a problem.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.
