Upgrade the i7-2600K?

Would you upgrade the above mentioned CPU? I use the pc for gaming, browsing and for running VM's on it.

I have an old H67 motherboard with no USB 3.0 header and want to change that as I'm buying the H440.

Is the LGA1150 future proof?

"Future proof" is an iffy term. Tech is always changing so you can never guarantee how long that'll do you. The LGA1150 should be standardish for at least another few years so you should be fine.

No but I would pick up a better motherboard for the CPU.

Could you recommend one? I like to have enough USB ports on the back.

And what about the performance of my current CPU? Will the update be worth it?

If you want the most future proof socket you can get now that would be 2011-3 probably. Otherwise wait until skylake (LGA 1151 will be new then) which will last you a while.

Get a decent overclocking board for your 2600K and you will be set for a while. Assuming you will overclock it that is.

Hell no that's still an awesome CPU, what you upgrade to wont be that much of a difference

Edit:

And yes get a better board, get a z77 mpower if you can or a maximus V something

The most common result of insufficient wattage is a paperweight that looks like a PC

Just get a decent Z68 or Z77, I think Z77 would be easier to find, but Z68 is cheaper, just find something good at a affordable price

There are only a few "expensive" Z97 boards with more then 6 usb3.0 ports on the back.

  1. Msi Z97 Xpower AC    8 usb 3.0 ports
  2. Msi Z97 Mpower Max  8 usb 3.0 ports
  3. Msi Gaming 9 AC        8
  4. Msi Gaming 7              8

I have an ASUS maximus 4 extreme and my 2600K is at 4.5GHz with 1.3 volts. I could go higher but I can't see it making a big enough difference

What do you think of the AsRock Z77 Pro4? Not that expensive and has quite good reviews..

I like that board, was going to get it for my i5, the h77 one though, but they are basically the same except the Z77 having oc and more pci, its a good budget board

Yes i know that, but you was talking about upgrading your current i7. to 4790K

Which in my opinnion isn´t worth it.

Because like i said you also gonne need a more expensive Z97 board then, if you want more then 6 usb 3.0 ports.

6 usb 3.0 ports will be the max for your current setup.

If you need more usb 3.0, then you could concider pci-e addin cards.

What my advice is, grab the Asrock Z77 Extreme 6, and use an addin card.

Or grab the Asrock Z77 OC Formula with 6 usb 3.0 backports, and 1 usb 3.0 front header, makes 8 ports in total.
