Resistor Getting Hot

Hi guys i soldered a resistor to some wires with 3 pin at each end to connect a fan to, and it works it reduces my rpm on my fan by like 400 but the only problem is the resistor gets super hot like above 80 degrees celcius, im just wondering is this bad and will it cause it to explode because if it does it would cause damage to my motherboard as its plugged directly into the 3 pin fan header.
