When you say the top right Menu crashes, that can't happen, that would mean explorer has crashed. Do you not see the taskbar too? If the explorer is crashing it is not necessarily a virus, there could be a dozen different reasons for that.

How i am frustrated reading Posts like "virus" - if you dont have anything to say - don't do it.

BTT:

I have the same issue since yesterday evening. Can you give me some information about your rig? Especially if you are using wifi - if so, PCI or USB?

Are you using virtualbox or any other VM software?

To me the issue occured first using a VM in virtualbox. Windows stopped responding completely while the VM worked flawlessly - very strange behaviour.

I already tried lots and lots of stuff - even the windows 8 "refresh" didn't help. Upon installing latest windows updates the problem reocurred. So i assume it is a compatibility problem with one of the latest updates or something.

I will now try to do a fully fresh install of windows 8.1 with updates included to see if maybe that solves the problem.

Edit:

I just read into this update package: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2975719/en-us

As i already mentioned WiFi and/or virtualization seem to cause the crashes.

Hang on - i'm on it.

So i just did a two fresh installs. One time i installed the (optional) ms update KB2975719 and one time i didn't. As for now this update seems to cause the crashes.

This patch is (a part of) the 8.1 Update 2 that is supposed to fix varios issues with windows 8.1 but is seems microsoft fucked it up.

Although the issues seem to be fixed according to the press (http://www.infoworld.com/t/microsoft-windows/microsoft-re-releases-botched-windows-81-update-2-patch-kb-2975719-249663) i am not going to install this patch for a few more weeks.

I don't know if a deinstallation of the specified update solves the problem as suggested in the articles i found. Although i can confirm that the issue is gone after a fresh install and NOT INSTALLING the patch. Before setting up a new system i would try to uninstall the patch like mentioned in various articles.

Regards!
