Computer Club Ideas?

Socky

Since school starts for me tomorrow me and a couple of friends pulled off an all-nighter. One of my friends who doesn't know jack shit about computers suggested we make a computer hardware club (First off, suggestions for a better name would be appreciated). We are starting our Junior year in high school and we need to do some extra curricular activities. So we have the idea of making a club, but we are struggling in what to do in it so we need suggestions on activities to do in the club. My school's funding for computer science is ridiculous and we have so many computers to screw around with. So far what me and my friends have come up with is, timing people to see who can build a computer the fastest, use SketchUp (or other 3D Modeling software) to build a computer case (my school has a 3D printer, new workshop, and CNC machine, YES A F***ING CNC MACHINE <3), and that's all we got so, any suggestions?

No ideas for nanes but are LAN parties permitted? You might also want to band members together to make a program or game of some sort and if that shit works out then you can team up in the future to make even more awesome stuff.

Keep in mind I am British so I don't know exactly is permitted and what isn't.

Well I hope the people who join it don't play Minecraft but if we play FPS games that would not be allowed

What if you make it the club's first project-thingy to make an FPS which will be used for club LAN parties? (Again, pardon my lack of knowledge about high school)

Well we can do that, but the idea of the club is to be focused on hardware and stuff relating to it

I guess you could also work together to make Raspberry Pi mods and similar things.

We had a club similar to this when I was a freshman, the main goal was to create the craziest build possible at whatever price point we decided for that semester.

Semester 1 was $800

Semester 2 was $250

Semester 3 was $500

Semester 4 was $425

We had our local tech shop sponsor us and they let us come in and take whatever we wanted as long as it fit within that semesters budget. (My friends dad owns the place so we got really lucky there).

We would then finish the semester with a LAN party with all the finished builds, usually with CS:GO and BF3.

This year I am the last remaining member of the Club, so it's safe to say nothing that special is gonna happen this year  :( oh memories...

OMG your so lucky. That would be great if I could arrange stuff with my local Microcenter, and maybe even get the school to help out because we need to spend the whole Computer Science budget or else it will be lowered.

Yeah dude, I should write a book about that, such great times. Unfortunately we didn't get to keep the machines at the end of the semester, so it ended up being us building as fast as we could and then just playing games B)

Btw you're so lucky you get to live near a microcenter, I got the pleasure of living next to one back when I lived in Detroit, it was so cool!

I wish we had that at my school. I am a Sophomore, and our school is really into the arts and sciences (Inspire school of Arts and Sciences) but I doubt that would ever happen.

My school supports Counter strike and those types of games. I'm sure they'll allow you if you ask.

I recommend searching for a local community college. There's one up in my area, and I'm enrolled at hardware course up there along with my high school electives. They teach everything from what PCI slots are to CPU sockets, Molex, etc everything a noob would need to know. Speak to your counselor/main office and see if you can use their hardware and stuff to tinker as they usually have a massive, massive surplus of stuff.

Eric S. Raymond used an E6600 from 2005 until 12/30/14 or open source software creation. Raw data computations in excess of 18GB each. Core 2 Duos still have tons of life left, my friend.

Actually me and a friend of mine are starting a computer club at our school, although it is software and hardware. Just nick a couple of old computers and show the parts. That's what our club will do for the hardware section

My school has roughly 3 computer related clubs. All of which don't really deal with hardware. It has a Computer Club (Linux, computer science), TSA (I'm joining that), and Robotics club so I mean adding a Hardware club is a possibility.
