MSI Z97M-G43 + Pentium G3258 OC issues / Any help?

Ah! Well that's nice to know. Running at above 72C will shorten the lifespan though, aye? I'd like to run under 70C if possible, even if it means a lower OC like 3800 MHz. The chip might not even be the problem, the motherboard is being very finicky with overclocks - I tried 3500 MHz and it still won't take.

 

It's strange because well, it's a Z97 MoBo - the ones specified to overclock.

Most intel chips are made for mobile so anything below 90 is really fine.

You can probably stay under 70 with 4.2ghz when you up the clock speed make sure you have the voltage on manual and than run something like Intelburn test for 10 minutes.

UPDATE: 4000 MHz @ 1.250 VCore on intel stock heatsink is good enough for me. Thanks all who replied/helped!

 

I am running into issues trying to overclock my G3258 on a MSI Z97M-G43 Micro ATX motherboard. MoBo set the voltage of the chip at 1.136 out-of-box, but I previously owned a system which ran a G3258 stable at 1.040 VCore (Stock speed of 3.2 GHz), so I set the new chip to 1.055 VCore and I can do everything just fine including light gaming such as TF2.

I tried a modest OC of 3.8 GHz @ 1.125 VCore and it hangs before being able to go into the BIOS with a small [A2] in the bottom right corner of my otherwise blank screen. I have to reset the CMOS battery every time this happens and it's getting a little repetitive. 

Anyway, my goal is 4 GHz with a low VCore on the intel stock fan since the previous system was stable at 4.2 Ghz / 1.120 VCore.

I have an unorthodox configuration of RAM, since I salvaged two sticks from my build from 2010 (2x2 GB G. Skill F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL.) The 2x2 sticks were hardly used due to the i5 750 / P55 chipset disliking the kit, which I promptly replaced with DDR3 1333. The third DIMM slot is occupied by a single 4GB stick of G. Skill F3-12800CL9S-4GBRL. The timings on the RAM are the same (9-9-9-24-2N). These all passed several rounds of mem-test.

I have a quality Enermax 530W 80PLUS Gold power supply.

I flashed the BIOS to the most current version which ironically states: "Enhanced Pentium G3258 compatibility" while I'm having these issues.

Any help would be most appreciated!

You can run 4.5ghz at 1.3volts and it shouldn't really be a problem.

Not every chip overclocks the same. if it isn't stable add more voltage.

Try upping the voltage a bit, what it will do at stock has very little to do with what it will do once overclocked. Also, get a better cooler if you can, hyper 212 evos aren't very expensive at all and own the stock cooler.

Not every chip overclocks the same. if it isn't stable add more voltage.

Try upping the voltage a bit, what it will do at stock has very little to do with what it will do once overclocked. Also, get a better cooler if you can, hyper 212 evos aren't very expensive at all and own the stock cooler.

 

Hmm, alright. I'll give that a shot. I do have a H212, but the case clearance isn't enough.

aslong as it's under 90C it's fun. get something like realtemp GT. 4.2 ghz should be good at 1.2/1.25 volts. you shouldn't have crazy temperatures.

Wow that must suck. Consider upgrading the case, there are plenty of cheap cases with more than enough room for the hyper.

Damn, that's the throttle threshold on Haswell? I'm too used to 72C on my old Lynnfield i5 750. X)

Well I heard the G3258 can do just fine @ 4.2 GHz on stock heatsink/fan, since it's such a cool running chip. I actually built this system for someone and I'd like to get a bit more performance for 'em on stock. The H212 is going to go toward a i5 4690K build I've been putting together. :D

well Haswell chips prefer to be under 72C but can go up to 90 before it will start to throttle.

There isn't a point in buying a Hyper 212 Evo for the G3258 the Stock cooler will be perfectly fine.

it's still loud, and with oc it's just safer to get n aftermarket cooler. but, as I said in a previous post, it will work fine, it's just not optimal.

It's not ideal, but if it's 'good enough', that's fine by me. X)

 

Heck, 4.0 GHz would be cool by me. The problem is actually getting the MoBo to like my overclocks. I could try the MSI software app, but those are notorious for overdoing voltage if I recall correctly.

It's not loud either, there sure are a lot of misconceptions about the stock cooler. It isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

My G3258 runs at 4.4GHz on the stock cooler and the temps are at about 67C under full load in a stress test.

My first experience with a G3258 was amazing, the mobo was a Gryphon Z97 and it OC'd to 4.2 GHz @ 1.095V. I could get it up to 4.5 GHz @ about 1.2V. This MSI board isn't giving me a good first impression of their products, but I jumped on a newegg combo of the G3258 + the MoBo and here we are. :P

That's amazing! The issue I'm having is with having an OC take, not dialing in the right settings. After I tweak the voltage / frequency to something like 1.125 VCore / 3800 MHz, it won't get to the BIOS or POST screen, but hang with a small [A2] in the bottom right. I googled it and it has something to do with SATA or PCI-E according to several sources.

Hmmm I can't recall one sec I'll check.

 

EDIT: Mines running at 1.25 Volts currently.
