Considering a ROG Swift

tezza192

I have a fairly decent rig which is a couple of years old now, 3770k and GTX 680 SLI

Is it worth getting a swift or will i need more graphics horse power?

You still got lots of power there but I think you would be better off waiting. Swift has no competition currently. It's a really overpriced monitor. Not saying it's bad it's a really nice monitor. Prices should and probably will drop to reasonable amounts when competing products arrive. They should be coming out soon, the Acer 4K GSync monitor is a nice example.

You probably can't run 1440p at 144hz very well

With gsync and settings a bit below ultra he should be fine. This doesn't mean the monitor is worth it though. The price is too high right now.

Zzz this TN argument again? How many of you have seen the damn thing in person? Go look at it first then judge it. But I agree about the price.

I am pretty sure Swift has really nice colours though. You can just throw it away because it's ''TN''. It's not like that anymore, this is an 8bit one.

@tezza192

I have been considering it as well. But think:

If the Asus 3840x2160 TN panel is $624.99, and the Swift's 1440p is .66666~ the res of 2160p. Then .666666~ of $624.99 is $416.xx. And the ROG Swift is $799....Wait....$383 for G-Sync?!?! Sounds unfairly steep for licensing a feature.

+$208 for .333333 MOAR pixels or +$383 for G-sync.

At the most, I would pay $100+/- for G-Sync...maybe. I want the monitor, but the math is like a punch in the dick.

$519 sounds fair to me. Not $799.

I have one and the colors, once you adjust it and calibrate it, aren't that bad.  They are a bit startling at first if you're used to the colors of a PLS/IPS panel.  I would suggest waiting a bit for them to iron out the kinks though.

If you go there you can see a lot of people are having issues with them.  I'm personally seeing the Out of Range error that's really annoying.  Makes g-sync not work most of the time.  It's claimed that a driver will be able to fix that problem in addition to a few others.  As of right now though, it's expensive (even more so since its sold out almost everywhere) and doesn't exactly "just work" as you would like it to.

That being said, when it does work work g-sync and 144Hz is a fantastic experience.  Even normal desktop stuff is so much smoother at 144Hz.  I can move around a window on the desktop and it looks super smooth.  When I go into my PLS monitor you can immediately tell everything's just stuttering all over the place.

Thrive on change. Embrace volatility.

the price may drop by 30~50$ in 6 months but there won't be any real competition to this monitor for at least 10 months to a year. Before buying though I would give it 2 months for asus to work out some QA issues then buy at whatever price you can find.

Yeah fair enough, a lot of people see a low end cheap TN and assume they don't get any better, but they do obviously still not as good in colours, but close enough.
