pci-e sata interface card. Is it worth it?

Mountaindru

To start off, the computer application that I am going to be using this set up on is the following.

Intel 5930k

Asus X99 deluxe

2x asus matrix 780ti

16gb corsair dominator platinum 2800

Evga supernova 1200w g2

Intel 730 400gb ssd

2x WD velociraptor 1tb

What I am trying to figure out is if a pci express card with the sata rev3 ports would be worth using for a faster transfer rate on the 730 series ssd. I will be using the computer as a home workstation for video editing and light gaming. I don't know a ton about the transfer rates but I have read that the sata rev3 have a much lower data transfer rates than pci-e slots. Any help or advice would be great. Money in this instance isn't a huge issue ss long as it isn't crazy expensive as the computer is already built. Thanks in advance!

If you want sped you are better off getting a thunderbolt card when one surfaces.

When you say thunderbolt I think of the display card, maybe I am behind on the times. Is there a thunderbolt pci host card now?

I don't think there would be any performance gain by running your sata drive through a pcie extension card.  The more affordable pcie ssd that I've seen do run around the 700Mb/s area and are therefore greater then sata drives.  However it is generally more cost efficient to run 2 affordable sata drives in raid0 (and backup to a mass storage HDD nightly) to achieve faster performance.

I'd say ignore that thunderbolt comment above, either he or I did not understand your initial comment.

The limitation is SATA 3 itself -- found on the ports, and the controller / interface used by the SSD.

You can't compare PCI-E based SSD's to SATA 3 SSD's. They are distant cousins...if you will.
