RAM above 1600

Hey people. I am building a new computer with a z97 board and a intel i7 4790k.
So, my aunt which is a Programmer told me that the board only supports dual channel and only up to 1600mhz. The point is, I see tons of people with the same board using higher RAM speeds and my question is, does my board support ram frequecies higher than 1600mhz?

Besides this what ram speed do you recomend?(I will not be overclocking my cpu)

Thanks in advance.

yes it support higher mhz. but i recommend 1600mhz cl9 . if you don`t OC the cpu why do you buy a z97 and a K cpu?

Most of the mb will support up to 2400 but it has no use for gaming only for thing like video editing or after effects...for gaming 1333 is enough.Higher frequency won't improve the fps

The board is an MSI z97 gaming 5

I might overclock it a little bit, I just ddin't want you guys to answer lower ram speeds just cuz the cpu wouldn't handle.

Anyways, It will be a minor overclock as the stock clock comes at 4.0.

Why not check the msi main page for ram it dose support. It's showing stock ram up to 1866MHz and oc ram up to 3000MHz. even if you buy 2400MHz or w/e you can clock it to 1333 or 1600. Ram prices are not much different from 1600-2133Mhz. So personally I would go for 2133MHz unless your aiming at a certain brand/speed.

Intel I5 4670k @4.6GHz // Corsair H100I // Asrock Fatal1ty Z97 Killer // Gigabyte R9 280x rev 2 // Sound Blaster Z

Evga 600b // 8G G.Skill Ripjaws X @2133Mhz // Corsair Spec-01 // Muskin Chronos 120G // Seagate Barracuda 1TB

i agree 1600 is more than good for your build... prices can rise easily to put faster ram in your system and the return isnt realy worth it.... spend the extra dough on a better gpu or an SSD

corsair 600t, msi z87-g45, intel 4770k, 16g patriot viper low-pro ram, asus direct cu2 780, crucial 256gig ssd, seagate baracuda 1tb,

^That's what the specs say it supports, from the MSI site.

Your aunt needs to be kinda ashamed for not knowing that these days motherboards support OC'd RAM usually up to 2800MHz

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Go with G.Skill. It's usually the least expensive. You can pretty much get a 8GB CL10 kit of 2400MHz G.Skill for the price of other competitors 1600MHz kits.

People go with Corsair because they don't know any better. It's not that the memory is bad, it's just that it is overpriced for the frequency and timings they offer.

Programmers usually know only about what they do. Unless they are gamers/computer enthusiasts, they know shit about hardware and, sometimes, software too.

1600MHz, CL9 and 16GB - that's the way to go.

What website are you shopping from? Generally if you are buying 1600MHz memory you want it to be CL8 or CL7. I'd be willing to bet you can get a 2133MHz kit of CL9 for probably the same price, if you went with G.Skill.

Here's a 2133MHz CL9 kit of G.Skill for $10 more than what you quoted:

Go with that kit.
