Laptop won't work with 2.4 Ghz

Oh well it's not that big of a deal as long as the 5Ghz band work fine with my devices, I was just curious but I guess it's a problem with my router since all my devices won't work with the 2.4Ghz unless really close.

Hello everyone, I recently switched internet provider and I have been having issues with my wi-fi connection for my laptop. I have an Acer Aspire V5-552G-X412 and for some reason if I set the router to default wi-fi parameter 2.4Ghz my wi-fi range is so small my laptop has to be right next to the router or the connexion drop. I can use my phone with the 2.4ghz but the signal really degrade after around 10-15 meters away from the router. I  tried to contact the Acer technical support but since my laptop is a bit over the 1 year warranty support they won't help me unless I use their forum (which looked pretty empty) or pay for help, so I figured I'll ask the LTT community about this.

I contacted my ISP about this and they told me it's probably a faulty hardware from the laptop (the technical support didn't know what 2.4ghz and 5Ghz band was). After a couple of google search I tried something, that is to use the 5Ghz only since it's suppose to have less interferences and it did work well for my laptop. I live in a city but I only have one neighbor so I doubt there is a ton of interference.

My problem is kind of fixed but I'm still curious as to why I have to relay on that 5Ghz band and if I put the 2.4Ghz the signal is so short the laptop keep dropping the connection as soon as I leave the room that the router is in.

Laptop is running Windows 8

Any idea guys ?

Also thank you for the answers :)

Try using a different router, if that means going to like a coffee shop or something that has wifi then so be it.

If that still doesn't work try updating your wireless drivers.

If that still doesn't work then consider getting a new wireless card.

1. Get a different router?

2. Get a new wireless card.

I guess it's the ultimate option but I'd like to try and figure out what's wrong if I can't I'll just use the 5Ghz band.

Is there a reason you don't want to use the 5Ghz band?

No reason, I just want to figure out why it won't even connect to the router using only 2.4Ghz. It's more of a trying to find the reason than fixing a problem but I'd still like to understand why.

Maybe there's a lot of interference on the 2.4GHz channel your router is on. If your router supports it you could try to change the channel and see if that helps.

I also contacted D-Link but since I use one of their router with a custom firmware from my ISP they don't offer support for that.... so that's why I asked the LTT forum

So far I tried their 3 non-overlapping channel 1,6,11 and all of them fail so far. I will try the other channels and update the post.

Update : I tried 4 different channel for the 2.4Ghz band and none of them worked.

The 2.4 Ghz band is an older standard of wifi, (so I believe, could be off, but this is the way I understood it) which didn't have as good of coverage area, and in a congested area, like an apartment for example, would have crappy range, but with dual band routers, if either band is congested, they can switch to the other band, the 5Ghz band, which is a newer standard. I could be off on this, so if I am, could someone correct me?

From what I know they are not standards just different frequencies. I just find it weird to not be able to connect to the 2.4Ghz....
