GPU too close to CPU cooler?

Venusia
Go to solution Solved by Venusia,

Holy cow, your rig looks beautiful. Is that the Sabertooth Mark 1 with a Gigabyte 780Ti? Amazing.

I believe it's so close because the graphics card has that awesome backplate. Is there only one way to attach the fans?

Thanks :) It's actually an Asus Gryphon P97 and a 780GTX Ghz Edition. I would have grabbed the Sabertooth but my local computer store had the Gryphon on sale for $50 cheaper. You probably can't see it in the picture but all of my HDD's are located in the optical bays so those two industrial Noctua's in the front can blow air onto/directly under the GPU, it stays super cool and I've been able to overclock it pretty crazy :) If enough people are interested I might do a rig overview soon!

For those who were wondering what I did with the cardboard - I cut out a piece of my graphic's cards box and put it in between the metal bars and the GPU. works perfectly! The GPU actually has a metal backplate but I figured better safe than sorry. Thanks to everyone who posted in this thread for your help!!!

Hi guys,

Was just wondering what you all thought about my GPU placement. Do you think it could be problematic to have it so close to my Noctua DH-14's cooler? I could always use the PCI-E slot below, but that would ruin my plans to SLI two cards in the future.

Thanks guys cant wait to hear from you!

Unless they're touching, I don't really see a problem.

You'd generally to slip a black piece of paper between the two to prevent the heatsink from potentially touching the graphics card pcb. In this case however, you should be fine considering the graphics card has a back plate doing that for you.

Shouldn't be a problem. Are they touching?

The only thing touching it is the little metal clips that hold the noctua fans to the heat sink

Man you got a lot of noctua fans but as for the question, it shouldn't be a problem unless they are touching.

as long as the GPU and the cooler aren't touching it should be fine, also with the direction that the fans are directing the airflow it shouldn't impede on the GPUs or CPUs cooling.

you could move the graphics card to the second pcie slot

The second slot of this motherboard is only a PCI-E 2 unfortunately. I could move it to the third but that will rule out SLI potential in the future.

Here is a close up. As you can see there is a little bit of clearance, its just the little metal bars touching it.

then i suggest do what @WoodenMarker said, slip a black piece of paper to prevent the heatsink touching the graphics card pcp.

Is there a backplate on that GPU? It's hard to see. If there is you should be fine. If not, just slide an insulator in there. I've always wished Noctua would sleeve those clips.

yeah, you'll be better off safe than sorry, so put a little slip of paper between the clip and the gpu.

I can't imagine the horror of playing a game (or even idling) then suddenly the computer cuts out and dies due to the graphics card being shorted out

As long as they don't touch, nothing will happen. If air is flowing over the components (You have fans, it is, you have Noctuas, it is, a lot.) then you will have noooooo problems.

Thanks for all the help guys. When I get home I'm going to put some cardboard in between them, I'll upload a picture for you all to see :)

I think that the distince should be fine if you put something nonconductive in between ...but you might want to switch the top right fan the other way to draw air in and get some good circulation going to your cpu :D

Would that affect temperature by alot?

yes because instead of the fans passivly pulling air to exaust ....the air is being pushed in and out ...and the airflow would move more the freash air THROUGH the heatsink imedeatly....

Ah i have a similar set up and was wondering whether to flip the fan... But i need to travel an hour to exchange for a new fan (I have the SP120s and the guy at the store managed to screw up the rubber part of the screw hole...)

I will admit, that's what I'd be tempted to do, though the backplate is almost certainly grounded through the screw hole in the PCB. (like motherboard standoffs)

ya you should try it out you might see a bit of a difference and be able to run your fans slower ....even if they are noctua xD (linus has made us all noctua fanboys xD)
