Help me decide between an Asus 1440p monitor or a Samsung 4K one

notenoughtv

So I was about to buy an Asus PB278Q for around US$760 (prices are crazy for the US but normal here) but on my country's equivalent of pcpartpicker the Samsung U28D590D popped up for around US$725. It's been a while since I have experienced a TN panel, I currently have a LG 1080p IPS panel (dying) and a Korean 1440p monitor (pretty good for how much it was)

So help me out guys and gals. Most of my PC activities outside work is media consumption and almost no gaming. I could really use the extra real estate for work but I find 1440p is good enough.

Anyone has experience with the 4K monitor, is it good enough?

Whats wrong with your Korean monitor? They have the exact same panel as the PB278Q

if you need a new one, get a 1440p, windows isnt ready for 4k, nor are tons of commonly used third party apps. and this is coming from a user of a high res panel.

Hard to say if it's worth it to you, that's really only something that you can answer. You'll definitely gain more real estate.

If you don't game then there's no real issue with pushing it GPU wise.

Why not just get an IPS 4k monitor? Do you need better color accuracy for your work?

The korean monitor is great but my 1080p monitor is on it's last leg and I need 2 monitors. I would buy another korean monitor but I would rather something with a warranty this time around

These are my only options right now and I don't need the color accuracy

I hadn't considered the scaling issues, thanks

Honestly I'd suggest the samsung 4k monitor.  Reasons:  You've said you want more real estate, it's not intended for gaming, and don't need supreme color accuracy.  Add all of that and a lower price than the PB, and it seems like a no brainer to me.

And also, Windows support for 4k will only be getting better.  I don't know about you but I'm not a fan of dropping a ton of money on a monitor than wishing I had gotten a higher resolution one a year later when Windows 9 drops with (most likely) better scaling support.

I have the asus pb287q which is based off of the same panel as the Samsung one. When looking at it strait on, the colors are better than any other tn panel I've seen. You definitely can't go wrong for the price. 4k scales nicely with 1080p video unlike 1440p which scales with 720p. I've looked at the pb278q but decided on the pb287q.

I just realised that the samsung 4k monitor doesn't have a vesa mount, that's kind of a deal breaker. Almost bought it
