I'm not sure here if I would to set-up a VPN through my router if that VPN is like a Hotspot shield VPN or any other VPN services out there or like Hamahci?

to have VPN service work in the router u need PPTP log in info

and not all routers support it

u need to flash tomato or DD-WRT on the router most of the time

I use Private Internet Access, my router logs into it and i have a virtual machine on one of my servers that can only access the internet through the VPN. It makes a very good download box that sends stuff straight to a network share.

It also runs a proxy service on it so i can proxy traffic from my main computer through the tunnel whenever i want.

You should be able to do the same with Hotspot shield.

You have a couple different ways that you can use the VPN features on your router.

1st, you can log into a VPN server from your router. This could be through a commercial VPN service like Private Internet Access, which is designed to obfuscate your location and allow you to bypass regional restrictions/censorship, etc. Most commonly used for things like accessing Netflix.

2nd, you can log into a corporate VPN server - many people who work remotely have this. The general idea is to allow local access to a corporate LAN while you're out of the office. You're able to see network shares, access Intranet, and so on.

3rd, you can create your own VPN server hosted by the router. This allows you to create a private and secure connection back to your home/LAN while you're away.

Not all routers will allow each of these setups. Depends on your router. Custom firmware - if supported - such as DD-WRT and Tomato - will allow all 3 setups.

There may be additional uses that I'm missing here as well.
