What is your logic on upgrading your video card?

cnapier39428

What I do is buy 2 top tier cards and then when one top tier card will out perform them I buy two of them... Example: I was running 7970s in cf until the 780ti came out. One 780ti outperforms 2 7970s so I bought 2 780ti cards.

When i can afford it, and my current card is taking it's dying breath.

Shot through the heart and you're to blame, 30fps and i'll pirate your game - Bon Jovi

Take me down to the console city where the games are blurry and the frames are thirty - Guns N' Roses

Arguing with religious people is like explaining to your mother that online games can't be paused...

if (card plays my games == ~60fps 1080p)

{

           don't upgrade

}

else

{

           buy cut down version of highest end card on the cheap

}

Don't 2x 7970s outperform 780ti? I really think they do.... I mean 2x760 beats 780ti in most games and 7970 is 280x equivalent which matches the 770... Logically it just doesn't add up...

But I just go based on budget and build overall I try to avoid upgrades I really really really hate upgrades I prefer whole new builds unless it's a budget issue or just some random occassion allowing an upgrade unexpectedly

1 780ti trades blows with 2 7970s, depends on what benchmark you run.

It's more about money than logic. If I had infinite money, my logic would be get a new rig every year.

Usually, I change my video card/rig when it starts to struggle to do what I want it to do. About once every 3~6 years.

Wouldn't we all? Get the absolute best GPU we could, the absolute best monitors, keyboards, mice, etc.

Bascially this but I always go for the 2nd card closest to flagship (ex. GTX 670 instead of 680.)

Well cut down version of highest card would be gtx670, or in my case amd generally offer more fps/£ and I don't care for shadowplay etc :) so I have a 7950, and from what I'm seeing upgrading probably won't be a thing for a while unless it fails.

Every two years I upgrade, and I won't get the best card but a cut down version of the best card as most people stated. So basically the second best card you can get.

Reasoning behind it is mostly because the best card doesn't usually offer a significant performance difference for the increase in price compared to the card directly under it. Also it usually takes around two years for the second best card to show its age in games.

The same logic when I replace my PC. When it's about 3-4 years old, it's time to swap it out with a new hardware. Money is also a deciding factor.

Generally it's a case of can this card play most games on full at 60 fps at 1080p?

No?

Do I have the funds?

Yes?

Buy the best looking upgrade within budget.

If not SLI, give old card to friend.

(Nvidia preferred)

Primary Consideration is Money.

But if money is not an issue, I usually upgrade every 2 generations. GTX8800GT -> GTX275 -> GTX470 -> GTX670 -> planning on getting the 870 if benchmarks and reviews are good.
