Best SSD fit for X99 build.

Mindtrick

I just ordered my X99 parts

I7 5960X

Asus Rampage V Extreme

32gb Corsair Dominator Platinum 2666mhz

Now I need to order my SSD. My current build has two Kingston 240gb SSD's. I would like suggestions for faster, better, 512gb SSD's for this new build.

Thanks

Get an M2 SSD if the Rampage supports it or the other options are 850 Pro and Intel 730.

Forget Intel 730, Samsung 850 pro all the way,

and I hate samsung.

i know you said you just ordered it,

why limit your self with a Read/Write of around 550MB/s when you already spent all the money on the x99 platform

why not Raid them (or 2 smaller Drives) in a Raid 0

SAMSUNG 850 Pro Series MZ-7KE256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) 2x of these for $400 and get around 1GB/s R+W

SAMSUNG 850 Pro Series MZ-7KE512BW 2.5" 512GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) 2x of these for $800 and get around 1GB/s R+W

or get a PCIe SSD for almost 2GB/s

OCZ RevoDrive 350 Series RVD350-FHPX28-480G PCI-E 480GB PCI-Express 2.0 x8 MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)  $810 with 1.8GB/s / 1.7GB/s (R/W)

for $300 more than Dual 512GB SSDs, get this with twice the R/W

Mushkin Enhanced MKNP44SC960GB-DX 960GB PCI Express x8 Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) $1071 with 2.1GB/s / 1.9GB/s

CPU: AMD FX8350 CPU Cooler Zalman CNPS 12x Motherboard Asus M5A99FX Pro R2 GPU RX480 4GB) Memory 16GB DDR1333 SSD: PNY Prevail 120G + Corsair Force LE 120G (Steam) Bulk storage Stable Bit Drive Pool with 5x 2TB 2x 3TB PSU Corsair 600w Case Rosewill Throne

RAID sounds good, except intel RAID controllers with chipsets are always poop.

the reason that the integrated chipset raid controller is always poop, is because the chipset doesn't actually Raid the drives.  all of the Raid functions is handled by the CPU and windows, which then address each drive individually with the data they should get/send.

where as if you get a good RAID card, the card simulates being a single drive and manages the raid with out the CPU or Windows.

so like I said, better to have one good drive.

At least until the day someone figures out a way to both have a raid card and not have to look at a green pcb in the middle of an otherwise good looking build

even with the limitations of how the chipset raid works it is better for speed to have dual drives in a Raid 0 then a Single fast drive.  on the other hand with the limitation of the chipset raid, it doesn't scale very well with 3-4+ SSDs in a Raid 0

you can take Dual of the Crucial M550 and get close to 1GB/s or a single 850 pro with 0.5GB/s.

On paper that is true,

Except:

1. 850 pro has 10 year warranty where the crucial has 3,

2. 850 pro is rated for 150th of write endurance and the Crucial M550 is rated for 72tb,

3. 1gb/s is only for sequential performance, which for 99.99% of client workloads is completely useless. and the 850pro is far superior in random performance, where it actually matters.

4. If you MUST do a raid then use intel 730 because the firmware is designed for it.
