Nintendo lays off 320 workers in Europe, despite speaking against the practice last year

320 individuals, including 130 full-time Nintendo of Europe employees and 190 who worked for the localization department through a leasing agency, will be laid off effective August 31.

 

"As a separate measure, Nintendo of Europe is reorganizing its European Localization Development (ELD) department, where it currently uses a number of temporary agency workers in translation and testing activities, in order to increase flexibility and cost-efficiency in the long-term," the statement continued, stating that other workers would be brought in from third-party companies as needed in the future.

Around 320 employees at Nintendo of Europe will lose their jobs this week, the company confirmed to Kotaku today.

 

That number includes around 130 full-time Nintendo of Europe employees—as was reported in June—and an additional 190 who worked for the company's Germany-based localization department by way of a leasing agency. Though technically those 190 people were temporary employees, in practice, they all worked exclusively for Nintendo, and many of them had been working there for years, some have told Kotaku.

 

All 320 people will be out of jobs by August 31.

 

Ouch, that just shows how much Nintendo is hurting on money right now. Around 320 people being laid off...that's insane. That's 320 people that will be out of a job. I really hope that they'll all be able to land on their feet again and find a new job soon. It's not even like they have any time too, because they're being laid off in 2 days.

And 190 of those 320 weren't even full time, 100% hired by Nintendo employees.

Nintendo, lay off the gimmicks, throw your casual Wii sports/fit type games into the trash, open your doors to more 3rd party devs, stop being so hostile to people simply doing Let's Plays and get it together. I've been your fan since I was 4, but I am not a blind fanboy.

 

If Nintendo wasn't bleeding so much..I'd love for them to reunite with the old Rare guys before MS killed them.

Yawn? Seriously? It doesn't matter the amount of people being laid off. What matters is that people are losing their jobs. Plus, yes 190/320 people being laid off weren't full time Nintendo employees, but they were hired help who worked exclusively for Nintendo.
