How fast should my NAS be?

prolemur

I have a netgear readynas duo v2 connected to my router and it has 2 seagate barracuda 2tb drives in x-raid2.

The fastest speed I can get when connected to my router via cat 5e ethernet is just around 40MB/s when copying to and even less at around a max of 30 MB/s when copying files from.

Any thoughts or is this how fast this nas is?

Not bad speed 1/3 and 1/4 Gigabit speeds respectively; Maybe consider buying a small cheap SSD for caching and caching alone like a 60GB one get some software just to maybe if there's no other bottle necks I'm unable to think of atm try and make it a tad faster...

Those speeds look pretty good. If you need anything better, you better build your own box.

With RAM cacheing, i can push 100Mbps to and 70Mbps from mine.

Thanks, ya this isn't the best nas, but I will probably want when when I use it to play games and the load times are super slow. How do you use ram as cache on a nas? Or is that only if you build your own?

You have to build your own to do RAM caching. I know FreeNas has a plugin to use, but i built a linux-box instead.

Basically, i shared my HDD to the local network and used a RAMdisk as cache.
